Let them be bored. It may seem counter-intuitive, but occasional periods of boredom can reduce stress by providing an essential break from overstimulation. (Boredom also increases creativity and builds mental resilience).
And try one of these 9 other simple ways to de-stress with your kids this summer.
Not one more thing to add to your to-do list—just gentle resets that help you both breathe a little easier.
1. Let them get bored. It’s an essential break from overstimulation—and you don’t need to entertain anyone 24/7.
2. Trade the perfect outing for a walk around the block. No planning, no car seats, no snacks. Just step outside.
3. Create a “quiet time” basket you can both use. Coloring books, puzzles, a journal, a fidget toy. Not fancy—just peaceful.
4. Try “parallel play.” You write, stretch, or doodle while they do their thing nearby.
5. Lower the bar on dinner, raise the bar on joy. Cereal night. Picnic dinner. Let it be easy.
6. Watch something hilarious together. This is strategic screentime. Laughter resets the nervous system.
7. Put on an upbeat song and belt it out. Best when driving, cleaning, or feeling cranky.
8. Dance it out—even just for one song. You don’t need a dance party. Just 3 minutes of movement.
9. Look for awe. Big sky. Tiny bugs. That weird cloud shaped like a llama. Awe shifts everything.
10. Build a rhythm that includes space. Time alone isn’t selfish. It’s part of the reset.
And if you’re finding that these small resets help—but not quite enough—that might be a sign you’re dealing with something deeper than everyday stress.
