This weeks employee of the week… Callie. We think Callie is about 8-10 years old, she was free from a neighbor. I can’t remember the last time she laid an egg- but she is the kids favorite and our most friendly hen. She also is the boss hen and tells everyone else when the good snacks are.

Friday Employee of the week… Flappy is a Silver Appleyard duck who keeps us entertained with her antics- shes usually the flock leader for adventures like a swim in the Mississippi. Flappy lays great eggs all year round when the chickens take a winter break.

Want to raise your own chicks? We love these heaters for the birds, which provide warmth and a safe place to hide. These little day-old chicks will expand our egg colors this year; they are happy and warm inside the house for now.

A little garden PSA from the Tiny… For all you fruit tree fans out there, now is the time to prune apples & pears! If you are just getting started, we recommend planting bare root trees in the early spring and pruning them hard the first year for easier management and long term production.

Some great advice from the U of M if you need guidance

It is time to prune your fruit trees! The UMN Extension Horticulture team has you covered with videos and instructions on how to prune home apple trees.

Well it’s -20 here in MN, with windchills tonight well below that. At this point in the winter our egg ladies are tucked in and dry with extra straw in their coop and run. The ducks will occasionally join the chickens in the main coop for extra body heat. While it might be a big debate to heat or not in chicken owners, we use coop safe radiant heat for the ladies when it’s this cold. They were all warm at bedtime and sleeping well. Stay warm out there!

Spring will be here soon and the egg flock with be out free ranging once again like this group.

We decided to grow meat chickens this year. With an expansion project, Sam's parents' farm ended up fitting 85 birds nicely. Some birds chose to enjoy the outside run, others preferred to sit next to the feeders.
They were butchered last Wednesday. They are frozen and ready for purchase. They come whole. The average sizes range between 4 and 7.5 lbs. We are asking $4/lb. Shoot us a message to connect if you are interestedšŸ—

2 years and going strong… I need to finish raspberry and jalapeƱo jams up but the strawberry is in full stock this weekend!

Standing in my kitchen and working on batches of jam…( some new flavors for 2024 … chocolate covered strawberry and strawberry vanilla) šŸ“ and I got to thinking…

With moving to also selling some plants of our favorite varieties this year- would anyone be interested if I also shared our recipes? I’ve been toying with the idea of doing a cookbook/ blog for things like our super popular Zucchini Salsa (for people that haven’t tried it think mango salsa), but I could sure add things like the jams, red lentil bread, beeswax lip stuff, great grandma’s laundry soap, and other things we use here daily.
