Jamie’s Journey

Jamie’s Journey This is an easy way to update those interested in Jamie’s journey of this rare diagnosis-blastomyces.

05/15/2023

It’s been a minute since the last update but that is because there have been no new growths or regrowths of the mass. He has not needed to go on any other medications since, which is great. If you have watched some news, you probably have read about the fungal infection in the U.P. And yes, it’s the same type-blastomyces. That’s one of the 2 he was confirmed with but the active mass was that one. It’s a wonder that more wood workers, contractors, farmers, excavators and more are not tested for this on a regular basis when sick. Maybe it’s not so ‘rare’ after all. 🤷‍♀️ and just needs more diagnoses. Look it up and you’ll see it can be in a lot of places in the soil.

A little catch up, December EGD went well and he can now do them every 3 months until he gets where his throat needs to be. Bloodwork and infectious disease appointments went well and meds continue yet until June. Of course after all this good news, the crap hit the fan—half of the sawmill building collapsed and damaged the tractors and farm equipment and a camper inside, one cow recently aborted her twins calves last week (twins would be a first for us) and now our family has been hit with Covid! Jamie tested positive a few days ago but he’s been super sick for the last 2 weeks almost. I’ve lost my taste and smell for the last 6 days and the kids seem like they have a cold but nothing too bad.
We figure after all of this, it can only go up from here! We hope! 😝

Arrived on time, Dr Z made it here on time/early as he didn’t have to wait as long in line to vote and they just took Jamie back 20 min ahead of schedule. We love that. Goal is to get to 20mm today. Maybe then for real it can be his last time getting the EGD. 😊 and the sun is shining.

Forgot to post updates a months ago! Last stretch went well. Got up to 18mm! Dr z suggested one more time and that time is next week! Covid test #7?? I think that’s what he’s up, Friday then a 9am procedure Tuesday. Meaning we have to be there by 7:30a. 😴
Blood test results show his body is still handling the medicine great and there is nothing out of whack. Which is good news. In a couple of months he will get that CT we are anxiously waiting to see what the mass is at or if it’s gone!
Next week we will hit the 6 month mark if dealing with this! At the same time it feels like forever but also like it was just yesterday this all began!
Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers!

Another Covid test tomorrow which means we scheduled another EGD Monday. The doc gave him 4 weeks to see how things went and the small size of Jamie’s esophagus just isn’t big enough yet to eat comfortably. October is also the 3 month follow up for all bloodwork on the infection and the meds. Let’s hope that looks good as well!

5th Covid test was another negative. So looks like the 4th??? And final dilation should be Monday afternoon to get up to 25mm. If not, we will need another. It will have to be 10mm more than where he is at so the possibility of one more is probable. But that’s ok because Jamie has actually been eating a lot better than before with less food if any getting stuck. We may be at the end of this road finally! All in time for our boys to be back in school!

Just to stay updated on the most recent EGD, Jamie has been having issues all of July swallowing all foods or pills, thus the EGD. Dr Z explained to us that a normal esophagus is around 24-25mm, well the previous surgeon missed a few sutures or couldn’t get to them due to inflammation and they didn’t just fall out, his esophagus grew around it a little. Jamie’s throat measured around 6-7mm. The camera scope could even pass through it. So they stretched it (ballooned it) up to a 12mm. In 2 weeks we will go back again to get it to 24-25 mm as the dr didn’t want to strain it by going the full length in one time. Of course the de said this never happens. Seems to be Jamie’s luck. At least it wasn’t anything else more serious and it’s all fixable. No complaints of the previous dr, s**t happens. I always say things could be much worse and there are plenty of others dealing with much worse than Jamie.
So EGD the 18th, adults only weekend after then the chaos of school and hopefully all calms down by Labor Day weekend for us for a weekend of camping with friends up north! ❤️

Everything is looking good! Bloodwork every 3 months, next appointment in 6 months and no need for another CT for a while. Meds for a year no matter what and then another year of follow up blood draws.
