Did you know that April is Canine Fitness Month?

This celebration tries to bring awareness about obesity and our loyal companions physical needs. Regular exercise also keeps your pets range of motion and core strenght strong, keeps them bright and mentally healthy, reduces behavioral problems and strenghtens the human-animal bond.

What can you do this month to help your pets live a more healthy lifestyle?
1. Go out for a walk! This will also be beneficial for you as the pet parent.
2. Throw a ball, stick or frisbee in a safe environment.
3. Try some fun activities like hiking, swimming, fetch and agility courses.

*If your pet has a medical condition that makes it hard to do the above, we can help keep your pet as strong as possible with low impact exercises. Feel free to reach out with any questions! :)

Big thanks to the gaggle of Ramirez whippets that helped our team learn more about canine fitness and exercise. Their Mom had a better editing program than us and was able to remove the walls from the picture. Our Spring backdrop this year is incredible, so be sure to ask your therapist for a picture of your furbaby. From left to right, this is Rimshot, Fiddle, Legato and Figgy.

Thanks Megan for teaching us some good stuff to help us be the best we can be at Sound Animal Rehab and Fitness!

Happy Graduation Nik!!! You did an amazing job during your rehab program! And hats off to his amazing Mom, Anna, for such dedication and hard work getting this boy back up on his feet. Nik suffers from intervertabral disk disease that caused back pain and weakness/wobbliness in his rear legs. After graduation, Nik will be joining our Sound Hound fitness program to stay strong and fit.

Did you know that the French bulldog is rapidly catching up with the dachshund as the poster child for intervertebral disk disease (aka IVDD)?? Not only do they often have IVDD genetically, 90% of Frenchies have congenital vertebral malformation, which means the vertebrae in their spine are often misshaped, causing chronic spinal instability.

If your Frenchie is showing signs of weaknesses or wobbliness in the rear, Sound Animal Rehab and Fitness can help get your baby strong and stable again. Give us a call at 205-977-7724 to schedule a consultation with Dr. McKnight.

Apollo is an active cadaver search dog that comes to see Dr. McKnight for a chronic, intermittent, rear leg lameness. We suspect his pain is from underlying intervertebral disease with a secondary iliopsoas (a hip flexor muscle) strain. Apollo is receiving acupuncture, extracorporeal shockwave therapy and laser therapy to get his pain under control and to get his muscle fibers realigned properly, so he can start underwater treadmill and therapeutic exercise therapy.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a cutting edge treatment option for arthritis, intervertebral disk disease, and for orthopedic and soft tissue injuries. Sound Animal Rehab and Fitness is one of just a few places in Birmingham to offer this service. If your pet suffers from chronic pain from arthritis, has an injury or mobility issues, Sound Animal Rehab and Fitness can help your pet get moving! Chronic pain affects every aspect of your pets life and we can help them live their best life!

Welcome to the pack Apollo!! You have been a perfect patient and we love seeing you and your Mom.

Please visit our website to check out what we have to offer your pet to help them get up and moving better!
