The Chow has something else in its mouth: two extra teeth! Most dogs only have 42 teeth, but the Chow Chow has 44 teeth.

One thing that may surprise someone new to this breed is the Chow Chow's uniquely colored tongue. As puppies, dogs have a standard pink tongue, but as they age, the tongue becomes much darker. Adult Chow Chows have blue-black, lizard-like tongues. The only dog that has this unusual tongue is the Chinese Shar Pei.

We could call the dogs Chow Chows, but in China the breed is called Songshi Quan. The name "Chow Chow" comes from a pidgin English term that was used to describe anything from the East in the 18th century.
