Southwest Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Welcome to SVAND's page! This page is designed for professional connection within the Southwest Virginia district.

We will post information about upcoming events, opportunities, and tidbits about nutrition related topics. The Southwest Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is comprised of Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Interns. The mission of SVAND is to promote optimal nutrition, health and well-being to the public by advocating for the Association’s members. As Registered Dietitians in the Southwest region of Virginia, we reach out to the public in various ways to educate on proper nutrition and health. Members of the association benefit by receiving a quarterly newsletter, access to our website, eligibility for various awards and recognition and reduced rates for meetings.

Come meet us at Parkway Brewing in Salem for our RD Day gathering! We will be meeting at 12:30 to enjoy some lunch, music, and a fun activity!

🍀SVAND will be providing corned beef sandwiches and irish potato chips for lunch in honor of St. Patrick's Day. 🍀

Lori Briscoe, M.A.
Appalachian Herbalist

Lori's Session is:
Appalachian Herbal Medicine: A Sensory Learning Experience

Herbalist, writer, educator and creator Lori Briscoe is passionate about
deepening the connections between plants, people and place. She is
driven by a mission to help individuals experience what she calls the
Magic & Medicine of Place. For the past 20 years she has been
educating and inspiring adults and children to value and conserve
Appalachia's biological diversity and rich cultural heritage to empower
a sustainable future for the region.

Lori holds a B.A. in Anthropology, an M.A. in Appalachian Studies and
Sustainable Development, and is a certified herbalist of the Appalachian
School of Natural Health.

Lori founded Appalachian Teas & Botanicals and HerbLAB to bring full
circle her academic and deeply experiential approach to the wonder of
the region. Her bioregionally grown and gathered herbs, tea blends and
botanical products lift the body and spirit not only in Appalachia, but
across the country.

Dr. Danille Christensen
Virginia Tech Associate Professor

Dr. Christensen's session is:
Building on Community Assets: Appalachian Foodways in Context

Danille Elise Christensen is Associate Professor in the Department of Religion & Culture at Virginia Tech, where she is faculty in the Material Culture & Public Humanities graduate program and the Food Studies program. A PhD in Folklore from Indiana University prepared her to attend closely to the skills, knowledge, and creativity of everyday life in the United States, including the social contexts and meanings of foodways. Her forthcoming book, Freedom from Want: Home Canning in the American Imagination, explores who has promoted home canning over the last two centuries, and why.

Our CEU Event will provide 4 CEU, and will be held on Sunday, November 12th, from 11am to 3pm at the Radford University Selu Conservancy (Located at 3215 Dry Valley Road, Radford, VA, 24141)

In anticipation of our upcoming CEU Event, SVAND would like to shine a spotlight on one of our speakers:

Kirby Stanton, RDN, LDN, Corporate Retail Dietitian

Kirby will be discussing Considerations for Appalachian Food Pathways, Health Literacy, and Health Equity When Program Planning

Kirby Moir Stanton is a corporate retail dietitian for Food City. Her role focuses on implementing health and wellness activities for customers and associates through content and programs that improve nutrition understanding in their local shopping experience. She is passionate about healthy literacy and accessibility to nutrition information. She hopes to make shoppers feel empowered that they can improve their health by modifying how they eat.

Prior to working for Food City and relocating to Bristol, Tennessee she worked as a nutrition consultant, inpatient dietitian, and bariatric and metabolic dietitian in the Tidewater region of Virginia. She was raised in Tazewell County, Virginia and completed her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition at Radford University in 2014 and her Dietetic Internship at Virginia Tech in 2015.
