I thought I was taking care of myself.

Daily walks.
A few small things here and there.

From the outside, it looked fine.

But if Iโ€™m being honestโ€ฆ
I knew I was avoiding what would actually make a difference.

I kept telling myself I would get to it later.

But I kept choosing other things instead.

Thereโ€™s a difference between doing somethingโ€ฆ
and really showing up for yourself.

Sometimes weโ€™re not avoiding everything.
Just the parts that actually matter.

In January, I taught a vision board class.

During this class we doodle cards for each of our goals.

That day, the card I was working on was my health card.

I planned on doing one thing every month for a year.

It made senseโ€ฆ
until it didnโ€™t.

That was a turning point for me.

I love 90-day goals.
I teach 90-day goals.

So why was I planning to take care of myself so slowlyโ€ฆ
instead of using 90 days to get clear and focused on my health?

It just didnโ€™t make sense.

So I decide to set a 90-day health goal.

This goal was intended to help me focus and stretch me.
But in reality it did far more than that.

By the end of the 90 days, I changed my relationship with myself and started to treat myself differently.

Thatโ€™s what happens when you decide you matter.

For a long time, I told myself my health mattered.

My physical health.
My mental health.
My emotional and spiritual health.

But my actions didnโ€™t always reflect that.

Then last April, I injured my knee.

What I thought would be something small turned into a long road to recovery.

I had to pay attention.

Not just to my kneeโ€ฆ
but to how I had been showing up for myself.

I couldnโ€™t keep putting myself off.

Taking care of yourself is not something you wait to do
after everything else is finished.

It doesnโ€™t work that way.

You are the only person who can take care of yourself.
And you deserve that care.

Look at today.

Not everything.
Just today.

Where is there a small opening?

Five minutes.
Ten minutes.

Use that time for you.

No big plan.
No pressure.

Just one small way to take care of yourself.

That counts.

Setting goals over a full year sounded like it should work.
It felt responsible. Like I was giving myself enough time to do it right.

But thatโ€™s not what happened.

When I gave myself that much time, it became easy to lose focus.
Life filled the space.
Other things took priority.
And what mattered slowly faded.

So I changed it.

I stopped thinking about a full year.

I focused on one area that mattered right then.
Not everything. Just one.

Then I chose one simple action I could repeat that week.
Something realistic. Something I would actually do.

Thatโ€™s where it started to change.

But that time keeps getting pushed back.

Taking care of your body.
Doing what you said you would do.
Making time for yourself.

All of that gets moved to the bottom of the listโ€ฆ
while everything else takes priority.

Open your calendar and look at the next three days.

If there is no time blocked for you, that tells you everything.

Put time on your calendar.
Keep it simple.
Follow through.

You are allowed to be on your own calendar.

Self-care is not just manicures and pedicures.

Those are nice, but they are not what actually supports you long term.

Real self-care is how you take care of your body, your energy, and your needs.

My poor car needs to go to the shop. She just couldn't go on anymore.

So we unloaded all of our stuff onto the curb and away she went.

The funny thing is years ago this would have been a dramatic thing for us. But look at him smiling. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Nothing has gone wrong.

We are asking ourselves, what can we find that makes this good?

Here are a few:

1. Apparently our car insurance has trip protection when they tow your car.

2. Connected with a loved nephew who came to the rescue.

3. We are safe and our trip goes on.

4. We get to drive a cool rental car

And that's just the beginning. We are still directing our brains to look for the miracles in this.
