Comparison is the thief of all joy. Instead of comparing yourself to other people—and let’s be honest, we only know of other people what they want us to see—try to remember that there is beauty in the uniqueness that is you.

When you find yourself comparing, try these mantras to bring you back to the present moment.

“fat” is not a feeling—it’s a distraction from what’s really going on inside.

the discomfort your eating disorder labels as ‘fat’ is often a mask for deeper emotions like sadness, fear, or anxiety.

when you can identify and name these uncomfortable feelings, it allows you to face your emotions head-on and fight back against the eating disorder.

recovery is hard, but rethink. makes it easier. your rethink. therapist will work with you on recognizing and naming your feelings. you may see this feelings wheel in therapy.

Part of ARFID recovery is doing food experiences. Your treatment team work with you to determine when you’re ready to start food experiences.

When you are ready, we recommend keeping a food experience journal. Here are some questions you can ask yourself (or your young person) during food experiences:

✏️What was your initial reaction to seeing and smelling it?
✏️What physical sensations did you notice in your body as you approached or tasted the food (e.g., tension, relaxation, increased heart rate)?
✏️Did you have any specific thoughts or worries about the food before, during, or after experiencing it?
✏️What did it taste like?
✏️What did it smell like?
✏️What was the texture like?
✏️What was challenging about this food?
✏️How would you like to experience this food differently?

there’s a time and a place for natural (or intuitive) eating, and the early stages of eating disorder recovery isn’t it!

you’ll get there, but for now, follow your meal plan, rely on the timing of meals and snacks, and eat mechanically when you have to.

if you’re struggling, reach out. we’re always here to support you.

if you’re constantly focusing on numbers in your head, we want to remind you: your body isn’t a math problem to solve.

you have to let go of the mental calculator and put your trust in your treatment team and your supporters—and eventually in yourself. You don’t have to have all the answers—you just have to start doing the things that feel hard.

don’t worry—we’re here to make it easier and support you every step of the way.

Hey, how are you feeling? Anxious about the upcoming holiday meal? Don’t worry, that’s totally expected.

If you feel anxious or your eating disorder is loud, just remember that all foods have a nutritional benefit. Remember that food is more than just fuel. Remember that you still need to eat breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

It’s okay to feel uncomfortably full. Your body can handle it.

If you’re really struggling, please reach out to us. We’re here to support you, even on the holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving. We’ll see you next week!

Keep showing up. Keep doing the things. Ask for help when you need it.

You’re on the rethink team now. We’ve got your back.
