Snapshot of fires and healthcare facilities over the past few years:

In the past few years, healthcare facilities in the United States have experienced approximately 5,700 to 5,800 fires per year, according to estimates from the U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association. These fires result in an average of 2 to 6 deaths and over 150 injuries annually. Globally, the number of hospital fires has seen an increase during the COVID-19 pandemic, although there is no consistent global reporting method to provide precise figures.

United States statistics
Estimated annual fires: Between 5,700 and 5,800
Estimated annual deaths: 2 to 6
Estimated annual injuries: Over 150
Estimated annual property loss: ~$56 million

Global statistics
Pandemic-related increase: There was a significant increase in fires during the COVID-19 pandemic, with one source estimating an approximately 2-fold increase compared to the previous decade.

Pandemic-related fatalities: Over 200 people died in hospital fires worldwide during the pandemic.

Challenges in data collection: There is no globally consistent method for reporting and analyzing fire-related losses, which can lead to underestimations.

Common causes
Smoking materials: Improper use or disposal of smoking materials is a leading cause of hospital fires.
Cooking: Kitchen fires are another common cause.
Medical and surgical equipment: Fires can also originate from medical devices and equipment.

Questions about Oxygen and O2 Concentrators In Use Signage?

Here's a breakdown of the key requirements:

• Reliance on NFPA 99: CMS follows the 2012 edition of the NFPA 99 standard (Healthcare Facilities Code), which includes requirements for oxygen systems signage.
• Storage vs. Usage: Signage requirements vary based on whether oxygen is being stored or used.
• Storage Area Signage: Rooms storing oxygen cylinders or containers must have a sign on the door that reads "CAUTION: OXIDIZING GAS(ES) STORED WITHIN. NO SMOKING.". This sign must be readable from at least five feet away.

Oxygen In Use Signage:
• Facilities allowing smoking need signs in all areas where oxygen is used, including walkways.
• Non-smoking facilities require signs at main entry points.
• All "oxygen-in-use" signs must be visible from at least five feet away.
• Recommended signage size and content are detailed in the NFPA 99 annex, emphasizing the presence of oxygen and no-smoking rules.
• Specific Locations for "Oxygen-in-Use" Signs:
Signs should be placed on patient room doors, oxygen tank storage rooms, and near relevant medical equipment.

We assist healthcare facilities with providing a safe, compliant, and profitable environment for their patients and residents at a reasonable cost.

Life Safety Assessment:
At Regulatory Compliance Partners (RCP), we offer our LSA services to promote safe and effective solutions for healthcare facilities in our area. A Life Safety Assessment is an essential element in maintaining compliance for the NFPA 101-2012 Edition of the Life Safety Code for healthcare organizations in our area and across the U.S. Life safety compliance is essential as a part of gaining accreditation for Medicare and Medicaid billing.

Basics of Life Safety Assessment:
Life safety includes the NFPA 101-2012 Edition of the Life Safety Code, and its reference codes found in Chapter 2. This includes fire protection equipment testing, which typically comprises alarms, passive and active fire protection systems and employee training in the right procedures to follow in the event of a fire. In general, your healthcare facility must demonstrate that it provides protection against fires for its patients and staff members. This generally requires that you compile and maintain information about the buildings within your facility, including fire and smoke walls, alarms and fire suppression systems.

The National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA, has established several codes that apply to building exits, protective systems, maintenance requirements and training for staff members regarding the appropriate procedures to follow if a fire occurs. Sprinkler systems, points of exit and carbon-monoxide detection systems are critically important to ensure the safety of all patients and staff members within your facility. Additionally, the NFPA has established guidelines for the use of medical gases and shower facilities within patient care centers.

Regulatory Compliance Partners offers proven inspection services that can identify areas of noncompliance with NFPA codes, and the guidelines established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This can not only help your healthcare facility to achieve accreditation but will also provide practical help for your facility and the safest environment for your patients.

The Importance of Accreditation:
At Regulatory Compliance Partners, we know that your organization’s goal is accreditation and a smooth compliance audit process. We target our inspection services to ensure that your facility is prepared for the accreditation survey process and to identify issues that must be resolved before accreditation is granted for your organization. This focused approach will ensure the fastest completion for your project and the right options for your healthcare facility in preparing for your accreditation survey.

Our Healthcare Life Safety Services team offers Life Safety Assessment™ services tailored to the needs of your facility and oriented toward ensuring that you receive the right recommendations and information about the current state of compliance throughout your facility. We will work with you throughout the process to ensure that you are as ready as possible for the accreditation surveyors. Call us today to schedule an initial meeting with our team. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you.
