Life changed forever July 11th 2005

July 11th 2005, my mother who was 46 years young, took her last and final breath after succumbing to the insidious disease of addiction that had plagued our family for so many years. I was 23 years old and just gave birth to my first child. My mother was ecstatic. She knew that everything would be different now that Ava came along. How I wish this was true. My mother battled her addiction for over 20 years with alcohol, benzos, he**in and fentanyl but after a short stint of sobriety, my mothers relapse proved to be fatal. Her friends took over 40 minutes to call the cops once they discovered her unconscious frantically trying to wake her up themselves out of fear that they would be turned in to the cops. Out of my bottomless grief and unspoken anger at her for dying on me.... bore a silver lining. I decided that while I couldn't save my mother from that fateful overdose that proved deadly, I would vow to learn everything and anything I could in the world of addictions and help people like my mother who had struggled. I finally have a masters degree in Addictions counseling and work at a methadone clinic helping people like my mother. If I can help even one person stop using he**in, then I know that this was all worth it. Imagining the daughter’s and sons and parents left in the wake of this tragedy only fuels my passion to ensure that If I could help one family suffering, than that is one less family who has to feel the unbearable sting of a life cut short by a drug that ravaged our family and left us shattered to our core.
