Melanoma is the most deadly type of skin cancer, however it can be easily treated when caught early. Early detection is key for a good outcome so do not ignore concerning skin lesions. See below for the ABCDEs of melanoma and what to look for. This photo demonstrates a melanoma and it breaks all of the ABCDEs.
𝐀) Asymmetry: if you were to draw a line down the lesion each side should match
𝐁) Border: moles should have a nice, smooth border. This photo demonstrates irregular, scalloped edges
𝐂) Color: Moles should be the same color throughout. This photo demonstrates varying colors of tan, brown and black.
𝐃) Diameter: lesions over 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) may be reason for concern as most melanomas exceed this. This patients lesion measured almost 3cm.
𝐄) Evolution: spots that are evolving, growing or changing should be evaluated.
