September is Su***de Prevention Awareness month, but let’s be honest, we need it year round.
Signs to look for in a loved one:
- uncharacteristic changes in appearance, behavior, choices, words, etc.
- extreme sadness/irritability/mood swings
- a sudden calmness after said sadness, anger, etc.
- withdrawing from friends, family, or favorite activities
- sleeping too little or too much
- increased use of drugs or alcohol
- giving away possessions
- acting recklessly
- loss of energy or neglecting appearance/hygiene
- change in eating habits
- sudden decline in work, school, or responsibilities
- etc.
What you can do:
- notice and ask- gently mention what you’ve noticed and ask directly if they’re thinking about su***de
- listen
- be present without judgment
- stay connected and check in regularly
- encourage professional help
