Whenever someone says this, I smile quietly and respond, “Oh yeah?”

Many people can be helpers. But what’s the difference between a helper and a therapist?

As a therapist, I show up with unconditional positive regard, non judgement, and understanding. I create a safe space for you to feel how you need to feel and say what you need to say.

When you walk in to my office, I open the book of your story. I’m with you through the lens of everything you’ve ever experienced, walking next to you, making observations, fostering your healing.

I don’t give advice. You’re in the driver’s seat, and I’m just giving some direction. It’s up to you where we go.

There are downsides of the job. It’s a fight to stay regulated during the day. To fend off vicarious trauma. To choose grounding instead of dissociation to deal with the intense emotions and tragic moments.

But, the privilege of being a part of someone’s journey towards healing is all worth it. Growing is what it’s all about.

So yeah, when people tell me they’re therapists too, it can feel a bit trivializing. Because someone who’s not a therapist saying that they are, leads me to believe that maybe they don’t yet know that much about therapy at all.
