JAMA releases study on elimination of community water fluoridation
Removing fluoride from U.S. public water systems would increase tooth decay by 7.5% and cost about $9.8 billion over five years, according to a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association Health Forum. The study looked to determine the cost-effectiveness of removing fluoride from the water and the associated oral health outcomes in children. The ADA said in a news release that this report validates both the financial and health consequences of discontinuing water fluoridation programs, adding that the impacts will be hardest felt by Medicaid beneficiaries.
