Have you noticed the glowing purple blooms appearing all across Louisiana lately?

That magical tree lighting up roadsides and gardens is the Chaste Tree " Vitex agnus-castus"

A longtime Southern favorite, Vitex is beloved for its dreamy lavender flower spikes, sage-like aromatic leaves, and ability to absolutely HUM with pollinators. Bees 🐝, butterflies 🦋, hummingbirds, and herbalists alike seem drawn to it.

According to the LSU AgCenter, Vitex agnus-castus thrives in Louisiana’s heat and drought conditions while producing stunning blooms from late spring into summer. It’s even considered a Louisiana Super Plant because of how resilient and pollinator-friendly it is.

But this plant carries centuries of history beyond the garden…

Historically, Vitex agnus-castus was known as “Monk’s Pepper” and “The Chaste Tree.” In ancient Greece and Rome, it was associated with fertility festivals, sacred rituals, and women’s health traditions. Folk herbalists later used the berries in traditional preparations connected to hormonal balance, fertility, menstrual wellness, and lactation support.

Modern research has explored Vitex for its potential effects on hormone-related symptoms, particularly PMS and menstrual cycle support through its interaction with dopamine and prolactin pathways. Some clinical studies have shown promising results, though research is still ongoing and not all claims are fully established scientifically.

One of my favorite things about herbalism is discovering where science, folklore, nature, and mystery meet. Plants are more than decoration… they carry stories, traditions, chemistry, medicine, symbolism, and wonder.

This new wet table saw has completely changed the game! Allowing us to work more efficiently while honoring our commitment to sustainability through recycled + repurposed glass. Every candle tells a story, and every bottle gets a second life.
