Early intervention is key to keeping employees at work. For example:

When a patient reported having mild stomach cramps, their PMR practitioner investigated and ended up diagnosing them with COPD.

Because of the early diagnosis and follow up treatment, the patient avoided approximately 5 missed workdays and did not require short term disability (based on information in this study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6072680/

Early intervention is vital when employers want to reduce their health plan expenses and avoid catastrophic claims. For example:
A PMR practitioner caught the early signs of liver cancer in a non-symptomatic patient during a regular exam. They were able to be treated with a limited amount of targeted radiation therapy.

Based on estimates from costhelper.com, early intervention saved the patient and employer from paying an additional $50,000 to $100,000 for extended targeted radiation therapy or partial liver removal- one or both of which likely would have been required had the cancer not been diagnosed till the patient became symptomatic.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, PMR Healthcare created a menu of COVID Response services including onsite screening. A patient presented at their onsite clinic with several health issues. Upon analysis, the PMR practitioner realized that the patient was not managing their diabetes and attempting to mask their symptoms with other medications. The practitioner created a new health plan for the patient which included reeducation, more frequent patient visits, A1c compliance, and increased support.

Thanks to PMR’s dedication to managing the root cause of the patient’s health issue, the patient saw improved health and the employer saved money on potential chronic disease related claims (according to GoodRx, people with unmanaged diabetes spend $940 per year on average on ER visits, inpatient hospital visits, and home healthcare).

A patient visited their near site clinic and stated they felt sluggish despite complying with their diabetic regimen. An initial investigation revealed that the patient was anemic, but the PMR practitioner continued to investigate until they could determine that the anemia was a side effect of the patient’s medication adversely affecting their kidneys.
In this case, PMR’s focus on root cause medicine provided the patient with a better quality of life, and the employer with a more productive employee!

A PMR patient visited their onsite clinic complaining of fatigue. Their PMR practitioner tested for a number of potential root causes, including a cardiology issue. The patient’s test results showed that they were at risk of a major heart attack, and they were sent to the nearest ER. When PMR followed up, they found that the patient was scheduled to have stints implanted the very next day. After the surgery, PMR began working with the patient to reeducate them on the healthy lifestyle choices they needed to make in order to solve the root cause of both their fatigue and related heart issues.

By determining the root cause of the patient’s fatigue, PMR prevented further potentially catastrophic health events AND the potential need for open heart surgery (costhelper.com says this ranges from $30,000 to $200,000).

During a new patient appointment , a young child complained of frequent headaches. The child’s guardian explained that their previous practitioner had not addressed their concerns. Their new PMR practitioner conducted a thorough exam and discovered several concerning symptoms- an emergency pediatric ophthalmology appointment was scheduled, and the child was there diagnosed with congenital eye disease.

Had PMR not been focused on finding the root cause of the headaches, the child would not have had their emergency eye surgery in time to save their vision.
