This observance works to bring awareness to the need for depression awareness and the need for accessible and affordable mental health screenings. A number of different factors can often come into play with depression that can include a mix of environmental, genetic, psychological, and biological /biochemical components. Not everyone experiences depression in the same way, but it can affect anyone at any time. So, it is important to take that next step and seek out professional help and be screened if you or someone you care about feels they may be depressed. Depression is a highly treatable condition with many different options available, but a professional should be sought out to help determine the best course of action for every individual that is suffering from it.

Use Common Sense

Working in home health care can be incredibly rewarding due to the one-on-one relationships home care workers develop with patients. Unfortunately, being removed from a controlled environment like a hospital does come with risks. Many home health care workers work alone, without the support of a partner or a nursing staff. For that reason, exercising common sense is one of the most important safety tips for home health care workers. To stay safe in any patient environment, home health care workers should take the following precautions:

If you’re visiting a home for the first time, make sure you have clear directions so you aren’t wandering around an unfamiliar neighborhood.
Protect your belongings by locking car doors and hiding any bags or valuables.
Keep your cell phone within reach at all times in case of an emergency.
Make sure your agency has emergency contact numbers on hand for you.
Confirm that your agency knows your location at all times.

Home Care Can Provide Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy
If you’ve had surgery and you’ll be needing physical or occupational therapy, you don’t have to go to a rehabilitation facility. In most communities, at-home physical therapy services are available. Another benefit that at-home therapy provides, is the opportunity to assess the safety and accessibility of the home environment. A therapist’s trained eyes can spot fall hazards or bathroom dangers and provide helpful preventive advice. Call us today.

Conversation About Home Care

Suspicion and denial are two barriers that will need to be overcome before your senior will even consider allowing a “stranger” in their home.

Share your concerns
Respectfully speak to your loved one about some of the things you’ve observed, and why you’re concerned. Ask them if they could use a “personal assistant” around the home to help them clean, run errands, do laundry or cook. Also mention that getting an assistant will provide them with someone else to talk to when they’re feeling sad or lonely.
