😴 STRETCHING WAKE WINDOWS

Babies schedules change dramatically during the first year (especially during the first 6 months)! This is actually one of the things I love most about working as a postpartum doula! There are SO MANY FLUCTUATIONS!! 🪀

You may need to review AND change your baby’s schedule on a monthly basis 🗓️

What too look for 👀
* are naps getting shorter?
* is your baby having new overnight wake ups?
* is your baby having new early morning wake ups?
* is you baby taking longer to fall asleep at bedtime and for naps?

Concentrate on increasing wake windows based on the developmental stage and age of your baby. A gradual shift (even by 15 minutes) often works best.

👆🏻Think about the TOTAL amount of daily sleep your baby needs and cap naps as needed, (especially before bedtime)! And adjust bedtime accordingly! 🥱

🧠 An adequate WAKE WINDOW helps to build sleep pressure/drive which helps one’s body to fall asleep and stay asleep effectively. For babies, this ONE thing can significantly impact the LENGTH and QUALITY of a nap and nighttime sleep!

So stretch, Stretch, STRETCH those WAKE WINDOWS!! 🙆🏻

LET’S GET ORGANIZED!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Setting up a nursery and systems in a home before a baby arrives is one of my favorite things to do! As a postpartum doula (and Mom) I can see firsthand how creating these simple systems beforehand can make the daytime AND nighttime tasks of caring for a baby so much EASIER!!

🧸 Create a home for everything. Use drawer dividers, bins, baskets and plastic containers. This will help in preventing clutter and keep baby items organized.
🧸 Take inventory and sort items. If you’ve received hand-me-downs, separate into different sizes and wash clothing. New items, wash and fold.
🧸 Create a basket for diapering items (diapers, wipes, diaper cream, changing pad, extra clothing, burp clothes) that can be used during daytime and nighttime hours.
🧸 Organize feeding supplies (bottles, bottle brush, breast pump, milk collectors, bottle rack, etc)
🧸 Designate an “outgrown” basket or bin and organize “next size” items so they are ready to go. Babies grow FAST!!

Do babies need NIGHT LIGHTS? What COLOR LIGHT is BEST? How DARK should my babies room be? Can I INTRODUCE LIGHT to make my baby less dependent on sleeping in TOTAL DARKNESS??

These are common questions from my postpartum doula clients and couples in my Newborn Classes.

HONESTLY, there is no ONE RIGHT ANSWER. Some sleep consultants are adamant about making sure the space is totally dark for bedtime and nap time and I have seen first hand the benefits of a dark room, especially for napping.

🧠 LIGHT does STIMULATE THE BRAIN and DARKNESS PROMOTES SLEEP.

BUT, this may not be possible for every nap (especially for those on “the go”) and kiddos in daycare settings are certainly not sleeping in these conditions.

So back to the BASICS-

💢 Babies DO NOT NEED NIGHTLIGHTS but they may be NECESSARY for night feedings and diaper changes. When choosing a nightlight, think about a light that you could DIM or even change the color. RED LIGHTS are often recommended, as it has been shown to be the least disruptive to melatonin production. Avoid turning on bright lights for these activities. This will also help newborns in distinguishing day from night.

💢Even though newborns may sleep well in a bright environment, soon after the 2 month mark, babies will become much more aware of their surroundings. This is usually when I recommend starting to nap a baby in their nursery. This gives them LESS STIMULATION when sleeping and PRACTICE SLEEPING IN A DIFFERENT SPACE.

If naps are going well and you’d like to introduce more light, leave a shade partly open or up behind a curtain. If napping is going well in a dark setting then there is really no need to alter the environment. Kids actually transition fairly quickly to sleeping in a room that is different from their usual environment.

Favorite nightlights?? ❤️

Is your 3-4 MONTH OLD WAKING FREQUENTLY OVERNIGHT and/or WAKING SHORTLY AFTER GOING DOWN FOR THE NIGHT?

This can be caused by a deficit in daytime sleep, or a “normal” 3-4 month sleep regression. More importantly, I often see this happening when a baby has not learned to fall asleep independently.

The baby may have also developed a strong SLEEP ASSOCIATION TO FEEDING, ROCKING OR BEING HELD TO SLEEP.

GOOD TO NOTE- changes in your 3-4 MONTH OLD’S SLEEP SCHEDULE is often secondary to “normal brain maturation.” Babies at this stage are learning new skills and their sleep cycles are becoming more adult-like.

THINK ABOUT- ⬇️
1️⃣ paying attention to appropriate wake windows and practicing new skills during daytime hours (think active awake time)
2️⃣ repeating a consistent nap and bedtime routine
3️⃣ using positive sleep associations (dark room, sleep sack, white noise)
4️⃣ stepping back for a moment and letting your baby TRY to fall back to sleep on their own
5️⃣ using soothing techniques AND allowing your baby to practice falling asleep independently 😴

Remember- there is a difference between sleep training and night weaning. Your baby can learn to fall asleep independently AND still eat during the night.

Questions?? I’d love to CHAT!!
