10 days until the TSC conference. If you wish to attend please go to https://because.massgeneral.org/TSCFamilySymposium. Each day leading up to the conference we will be highlighting a pre-recorded speaker.
Today we would like to introduce Dr. Mark Richardson! Dr. Richardson specializes in functional neurosurgery, surgeries that improve brain function and quality of life. Dr. Richardson performs Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS), and laser ablation surgery for people with epilepsy. These surgeries are minimally invasive because they are done through small openings, where the brain is seen using MRI. Recovery for people who receive these surgeries is fairly quick: many patients spend just two nights in the hospital. Dr. Richardson’s team offers early neurosurgical consultations to anyone who has an interest in understanding potential surgical options. Seizures affect quality of life, and he believes every patient with epilepsy deserves the opportunity to learn about treatments that may help them. The early neurosurgical consultation is a welcoming environment to get information about modern treatments without having to make any decision about surgery. Figuring out the best way to control seizures is a challenging puzzle, so Dr. Richardson values listening to patients to learn what is most important to them. Dr. Richardson said it is a privilege to impact people’s lives and his goal for the next year is to educate more of the community about the role that epilepsy surgery can play in improving quality of life for people with TSC.
