It's the pursuit of our passions that really make residency special. Help support BUMC resident's passions by making a gift to the 2018 Alumni Give Campaign.

We're now accepting donations that will go toward supporting our resident pathway and scholarship activities! With your help, we will be able to help our residents attend national meetings and conferences, pay for supplies and trainings, and host networking events. Every small amount makes a huge di...

Happy Faculty Friday! Today, we are featuring the one and only, Dr. Omar Siddiqi! He is a Cardiologist at BMC and also serves as the the Program Director of Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship here at BMC!
🩺Why BMC? “I completed my cardiovascular medicine training at BMC, and was fortunate enough to be offered a position where I could develop my interest in medical education. This was largely due to a robust group of mentors who understood my career path and were invested in my success.”
👨🏽‍🏫 What do you enjoy most about being a teaching faculty member here? “I am driven by my many daily interactions with medical students, residents, and fellows at BMC and BUSM. I enjoy the intellectual engagement of teaching learners at all different levels. The environment here is very collegial and collaborative. These interactions are all driven by the underlying mission of BMC to provide exceptional care to patients from all walks of life.”
💫What would you like prospective applicants to know about training at BMC? “Located in one of the most vibrant cities in the country, Boston Medical Center will enrich your training with colleagues and mentors who are truly dedicated to facilitating your development into the best that you can be!”
Be sure to follow Dr. Siddiqi on Instagram ( and .cardiology and on Twitter ( and )

Internists play a central role in providing gender-affirming care for transgender and gender non-conforming patients. This week, we were treated to an amazing three-part lecture series by our PGY-3s Catherine Bielick and Hannan Braun, in partnership with our APD Dr. Jenny Siegel and the BMC Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS).
Highlights:
🖊 Defined terminology (s*xual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, s*x assigned at birth)
📝 Explored our role in writing letters in support of name changing
💊 Discussed counseling and monitoring around initiation of hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
🦽 Reviewed options for gender affirming surgeries
Key points:
🩺 Our actions are hugely important to establishing trust with our transgender patients and reducing the stigma associated with their care
💉 Gender affirming HRT is medically indicated, rewarding to prescribe, and part of our scope as internal medicine physicians
💊 Masculinizing HRT for transmen involves testosterone therapy, whereas feminizing HRT for transwomen involves both estrogen therapy and antiandrogen therapy (usually spironolactone)
📚 Mental health support is important but is not mandatory/should not act as a gatekeeper for patients getting their care
🚑 Studies show very low absolute risk of VTE with use of feminizing HRT (estradiol, different form than ethinyl estradiol typically used for contraception)
👩🏽‍⚕‍ Caring for transgender patients follows similar principles as primary care for cis-gender patients
🏳️‍🌈 We are proud to provide transgender care at BMC!
