It's that time of year when people with limited speech may need a little extra TLC in their AAC systems to make sure they're able to fully communicate to the best of their abilities! This week, I've been making lots of Halloween-specific pages for some of my autistic kiddos who use speech-generating devices like the following display (with recorded voice output)

Wonderful news!

This week, Jansport released a first-of-its-kind collection of adaptive bags and backpacks to address the unmet needs of mobility device users who want to bring efficiency to their daily lives alongside a stylistic flourish.

When teaching language to a typical child, we speak to them for about a year before expecting them to say their first word in their language. We must think of AAC as it’s own language and consistently use that language system with the communicator. Having an AAC system does not make an individual an AAC user. They must be shown how to use it. Model AAC by using it yourself; show them how it works. Be patient because learning AAC takes time for everyone involved.

Thank you Lauren S. Enders, MA, CCC - SLP and Jane Farrall Consulting! Hand-over-hand is not the answer!

I've been meaning to make this for a while - and today was the day! It's a question I get asked many times a year - and here's responses I've pulled together. Thanks to the people who contributed to the discussion about this on the AAC Through Motivate, Model, Move out the Way Page and to the wonderful Helen Tainsh!
