Toddler sleep can get really real when your 2-year-old won’t stay in bed, keeps leaving their room, or has figured out how to climb out of the crib.

But no, you’re not doomed!

For strong-willed toddlers, sleep often comes down to two things: safety and consistency. A 2-year-old wandering the house at night is a safety issue, and exhausted parents should not have to rely on hearing every little sound to keep their child safe.

It may take time and lots of repetition, but with the right plan, clear boundaries, and consistent follow-through, toddler sleep can improve.

Most parents think the first step for better sleep is choosing a sleep training method.

But before you decide between check-ins, camping out, chair method, or anything else, you need to understand your child’s individual 24-hour sleep needs.

Because if the schedule is asking for more sleep than your child can actually give, bedtime is going to be hard no matter what method you use.

You might be trying for a bedtime that’s too early.

You might be expecting too much daytime sleep.

You might be dealing with split nights, long bedtime battles, or a child who fights sleep because they simply don’t have enough sleep drive yet.

That doesn’t mean sleep training won’t work, it means the schedule needs to make sense first.

Your schedule needs to be formed around YOUR child’s specific needs (not generic wake windows!).

When you understand how much sleep your child needs across the full 24 hours, you can create realistic expectations for naps, bedtime, and overnight sleep.

And when the schedule fits the child, everything gets easier.

Less fighting
Less crying
Less guessing

One of the biggest things I hear from clients when they are first starting out with sleep training is that they’ve tried everything to help their baby sleep better.

But trying too many things is confusing to children.

I’ve tried early bedtime, I’ve tried later bedtime.

I’ve tried sitting next to the crib and I’ve tried doing check-ins.

I worked on only the start of the night but not middle of the night wakings or naps. I’ve tried only fixing naps.

I get it that being tired can have you desperately searching for answers and trying new things. But ultimately, consistency wins.

Staying consistent when your toddler is climbing on you while implementing the Chair Method is not easy! Trust me, I’ve seen parents go through it. But I’ve also seen parents stay consistent with their method, routine, and schedule and come out the other side joyfully sleeping.

“It worked! And so fast! You’re a magician!”

I assure you, I’m no magician and it wasn’t even me who made it happen - it was the parents who followed my direction and stayed consistent.

If you’re struggling to know what to stay consistent with, I can certainly help you there. Whether it’s figuring out your child’s 24-hour sleep needs and building their schedule or choosing a method that feels right for you and your family, I’m here.

Check & Console can be a really effective option… for the right child and family.

This method tends to work best for babies and younger toddlers who can tolerate some space and settle with brief reassurance instead of constant support (and for families that can tolerate a little crying).

Because here’s what actually matters:
You’re not staying in the room.

You’re giving your child the opportunity to fall asleep, then checking in at intervals to reassure them.

For some children, that feels predictable and calming.
For others, the in-and-out can feel frustrating… and actually escalate things.

And if your child is used to a lot of hands-on support (rocking, feeding, lying with them), this is a bigger shift, but it does still work quickly with consistency.
You’re still showing up—but in a different way.

This is also where consistency really matters.
If the checks aren’t predictable or you change your approach night to night, progress can stall quickly.

And like anything else, the method isn’t the magic.

If your child isn’t truly set up for sleep, even the best method will feel harder than it should.

If you’re not sure whether this is the right fit for your child, I can help you figure it out.

The only truly consistent, age-based “sleep regression” is around 4 months, when sleep matures out of the newborn stage.

After that?

Sleep disruptions are not about a specific age on a chart.

Between 4 months and 2 years, there is a lot happening:

Teething
Rolling
Crawling
Standing
Walking
Separation anxiety
Language development
Nap transitions
Illness
Travel
Schedule disruptions
New caregivers
Big life changes

Any one of these can disrupt sleep.

Some children breeze through nap transitions but struggle with language development. Others handle new skills just fine but have a hard time with separation anxiety. Some are simply more sensitive to change overall.

That’s why it can feel like you are “stuck in one regression after another.”

It’s not a regression schedule. It’s real life, development, and change.

The best place to start:

✔️ Keep routines predictable
✔️Stay consistent where you can
✔️Offer extra connection without creating brand-new sleep habits you cannot sustain
✔️Look at the full picture, not just the calendar

And always check in with your medical provider if the sleep disruption is intense, sudden, or feels very out of character. Ruling out medical matters.

If you are stuck in a regression rut, comment CALL and I’ll send you the link to schedule your free 30-minute sleep assessment.

Turning 45 made me pause… and take inventory.

My brain is quick to focus on what I haven’t done yet. But this time, I looked back instead.

The last 10 years held a lot of hard: postpartum life, divorce, mental health struggles, co-parenting, grief after losing a business I poured everything into.

But they also held this:

I bought my own home.
I built three businesses.
I started a podcast with my sleep hero.
I’ve helped 1,000+ families get the rest they need.
My work has been featured in the New York Times.

And what I’ve learned matters even more than any milestone:

Hard work pays off, even when it’s slower than you want.
Mistakes don’t define you or your future.
Broken things can be rebuilt. Hearts, businesses, all of it.
Motherhood is the hardest and most rewarding job I’ll ever have.

None of this path exists without my sleepless daughter… the one who changed everything and led me here.

The best is still ahead 🤍

If you’re in a season that feels heavy right now, it doesn’t mean you’re off track. Sometimes it means you’re building something bigger than you can see.

If sleep is one of the things weighing on you, I can help.

The chair method can be a really supportive option… for the right child.

I tend to see it work best for older toddlers and preschoolers who want a parent nearby but can also tolerate some boundaries around what that looks like.

Because this is the part that matters:

If your child is used to being rocked to sleep, laid with, or having you right next to them…
this method changes that.

You’re still there — but you’re no longer doing the thing they’re used to.

Some children handle that shift really well.

Others find it frustrating, which is where this can start to drag on.

And for younger babies (and even some toddlers), your presence can actually be more stimulating than soothing… making it harder, not easier.

It’s never just about the method.

It’s about your child’s temperament, what they’re used to, and whether they’re truly set up for sleep in the first place.

If you’re not sure what will work for your child, I can help you figure it out 🤍

Pick-up/put-down is one of the most gentle ways to support newborn sleep.

You can try this at any time, but I want to be very clear about something…
you never want to leave a newborn to cry. At this stage, we’re responding and supporting, not expecting independence.

This approach can be especially helpful if you’re starting to work toward sleep in a safe sleep space.
That means on their back, in a crib or bassinet, with a clear, safe sleep environment.

The idea is simple:
you put your baby down, and if they become upset, you pick them up, calm them, and then place them back down.

You don’t have to commit to doing this all day.
You can try it for just one nap or even the start of the night and see how your baby responds.

And that part matters… because not every baby responds the same way.

Some babies settle beautifully with this.
Others get more stimulated by the picking up and putting down.

The only way to know is to try.

If you’re in the newborn stage, think of this as support, not sleep training.

Save this to come back to when you need it 🤍

Life can feel heavy and hard. But it’s important to remember, you’ve gotten through all the hard times. Every. Single. Time.

Keep putting on foot in front of the other. And remember to celebrate yourself - because you can and will get through this time, too.
