I was honored to serve as an American Foundation for Su***de Prevention Care Team member at the Fairfax Walk on Saturday (along with my new friend, Erin), holding space for anyone who wanted to talk. I'm deeply grateful for the courage of those who shared their stories; it's a reminder that healing is a journey we walk together, in connection and community.

P.S. Over 850 walkers, 80 Teams, and more than $150,000 raised for su***de prevention research, education, and advocacy. Job well done!

Our Kindred Future is the new online publication you might just want to check out ...

Building a better world—for all, for good.

We’re not here to watch collapse.
We’re not here to feed the algorithm.
We’re not here to be the product.

We’re here to remember what makes us human.
To protect it. To practice it.
And to choose a future worth living in.

In a time when powerful technologies extract more than they offer; our data, our labor, our attention, and our agency – we choose something else. We choose dignity. We choose community. We choose to build futures rooted in connection, courage, and collective imagination.

We believe in solutions that serve people, not profits.
In connection that resists social fragmentation.
In inclusion that is not performative, but structural.
In technology as a tool, not a master.
In stories that doesn’t just bear witness, but build people power.

We don’t claim neutrality in a world sliding toward repression and control.
We side with those reclaiming the commons, regenerating the land, fighting for democracy, and dreaming beyond the limits of what is.

We’re not afraid of the future.
We want a future that we choose – together.

In case you missed it last month, a article of mine was published in Spirit of Change Magazine! Check out my blog page for the direct link to read "Turning Anxiety Into Empowerment," because seriously... anxiety is not a sign that something is wrong with you, but a messenger alerting you that something within you needs your attention.

On Sunday, the last full day of Summer, I attended "Sonic Tonic: Autumn Equinox Sound Bath" with Reggie Hubbard atSun & Moon Yoga Studio . It was a deep experience of listening and feeling what Autumn sounds like through chimes, Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, rain stick, and other instruments.

Then, this morning on the first day of Autumn, I woke up hearing the instrumental sound in my head of the leaves falling. I went out to my car and saw this on my windshield....

As we transition from Summer into the energy of Autumn, we are being called to turn inward and release what weighs us down. Just as the trees let their leaves fall, we too can let go of stress, worry, and what no longer serves us.... making space for rest, reflection, and renewal.

Autumn is about to show us how beautiful it is to let things go...

"TURNING ANXIETY INTO EMPOWERMENT" was published in Spirit of Change Magazine.

Excerpt:
Have you ever felt your heart racing before a difficult conversation, your stomach in knots before making a big decision, or your mind spinning with what-ifs late into the night? If so, you are not alone. This is part of being human. But what if I told you that anxiety isn’t just something to “just get rid of”? What if it holds wisdom that is worthy of listening to?

Anxiety often gets a bad reputation, especially when we view it as something wrong with us, something we need to suppress, avoid, or fix. In our fast-paced culture, where productivity and perfection are often celebrated, there’s not a lot of space for the discomfort anxiety brings.

When we start to view anxiety as a messenger rather than a malfunction, we can begin to reclaim our power. We can choose to listen differently, respond more mindfully, and relate to ourselves with greater care.

One of the most empowering shifts you can make is to view anxiety not as something to shove away or suppress, but as a purposeful energy to channel into aligned action..."

My Journey....

Joanna Barrett, LMHC, MA, E-RYT, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and an Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher, offering counseling and yoga to clients with emotional and physical challenges, as well as those looking for stress relief and relaxation. Joanna’s experience in holistic wellness and mind-body modalities for healing has led her towards guiding individuals to reach their full potential for optimal well-being. Joanna’s journey to yoga began after struggling for many years with depression, chronic fatigue, migraines, insomnia, and extreme stress. Her body, mind, spirit, and soul needed profound calming, centering, and relaxation. After her first yoga class, Joanna’s mind was clear and open, her body’s tension had subsided, and she felt that there was healing that could be done on her mat. Three years later, Joanna found herself gravitating towards yoga teacher training to advance her practice and find passion and purpose in her life. Moved deeply by the psychological effects of yoga, Joanna decided to pursue a career in yoga and mental health counseling. She earned her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. Joanna’s career includes the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center, Harvard University’s School of Public Health, South Boston Yoga, Healing Tree Yoga & Wellness Center, Om Births, Breathe & Play Everyday, The Yoga Room, the Pathways Institute, and community mental health agencies in the Boston area. Joanna has experienced over 1,000 hours of yoga workshops and trainings in vinyasa, yin, restorative, prenatal, therapeutic, and trauma-informed yoga. Joanna completed her 200-hour teacher training at South Boston Yoga with David Vendetti and Todd Skoglund. She continued her studies and completed her Relax and Renew® restorative yoga teacher training with Judith Hanson Lasater, yin yoga teacher training with Joshua Summers, and prenatal yoga teacher training with Rebecca Conant of Om Births. Additionally, she completed teacher training modules in the areas of “the psychology of yoga” and “restorative yoga therapeutics” with Bo Forbes, as well as “Trauma Informed Mindy Body (TIMBo)” foundations training with Sue Jones and YogaHOPE. Joanna completed a yoga therapy mentorship program with Kate Graham of Soulful Yoga Therapy at South Boston Yoga, and later went on to assist the program. Continuing her studies, Joanna regularly attends national workshops and classes to learn new tools to bring to her students. She has taken workshops and training programs with Seane Corn, Elena Brower, Kathryn Budig, Shiva Rea, and Dr. Timothy McCall, among others. Joanna is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, American Psychological Association, National Counseling Association, Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association, and Yoga Alliance. Joanna is also a public speaker for national women's organizations, and a published writer for Elephant Journal, Identity Magazine, the South Shore Wellness Collective, the Pathways Institute, Cream no Sugar Magazine, and Yoga Girl.
