Great news for Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Starting January 1, 2026 screening breast MRI will be available at no cost for high-risk, asymptomatic patients with most Massachusetts health plans. This is an important step forward in early detection and peace of mind.

At Shields, we’re committed to expanding access to life-saving imaging. We’ve just installed a second advanced 3T MRI with AI technology at our Worcester location in partnership with UMass Memorial Health

Opening later this month, this scanner will make it even easier for our communities to get the care they need.

We are so pleased when patients are able to complete scans they were previously not able to finish. Claustrophobia affects a lot of people, but with the right patient care and technology most cases are more than manageable. Especially on our 1.5T and 3T wide open-bore MRI scanners, which offer the most headroom in MRI. With 70 cm opening that provides the most distance from a patient’s face these wide-bore systems ease patient anxiety over being in an enclosed space.

👍 All three scanners on site have a 70cm opening, adding to patient comfort by reducing claustrophobia

This new 3T MRI with A.I. technology is expected to start scanning patients in late October. We can't wait to bring this state-of-the-art technology to the community in partnership with UMass Memorial Health

Crews were working Thursday morning to move a 13,000-pound, three-tesla GE 3T SIGNATM Hero MRI into the Shields MRI at UMass Memorial building at 214 Shrewsbury St.
