Did you know that years ago, almost ALL embryo transfers were fresh? 🤔
Eggs were collected, fertilized, grown for 5 days, and transferred right away into the Surrogate’s uterus. But today, 99% of transfers are frozen ❄️ — and for very good reasons ❗
Here’s why frozen embryo transfers are now the gold standard: 👇
🔹 Cryopreservation is now so advanced that embryos can be frozen safely for years without risk of damage.
🔹 Genetic testing (PGD/PGS) helps ensure embryos are healthy and free of chromosomal abnormalities, giving a much higher chance of successful transfer and a healthy baby. Since testing takes about 3 weeks, embryos must be frozen while waiting for results.
🔹 Better timing for Surrogates – Every woman’s body responds differently to medication. With frozen embryos, doctors can transfer only when the Surrogate’s body is perfectly ready, maximizing success.
💬 Some clinics still use fresh transfers in rare cases (like very early 1–3 day embryos that can’t be re-frozen). But this approach is far less reliable and doesn’t allow for genetic testing. ❌
💎 The international standard for embryo freezing is day 5 blastocysts — the healthiest stage for successful transfers.
💡 And here’s something practical: If you already have frozen embryos, your surrogacy program is more affordable, since you skip stimulation, retrieval, IVF, and testing costs. 💵 But where you create your embryos matters — success rates and testing options vary by country.
