✨ It’s time to take the RAD out of Radiation‑Associated Dysphagia!

✨ Radiation treatments for head and neck cancers—especially those tied to HPV-positive tumors—can deliver a lifesaving cure, but also bring a hidden long‑term cost: difficulty swallowing, or RAD.

✨ These issues range from the immediate pain and dryness of mucositis and xerostomia, to chronic muscle stiffness, fibrosis, nerve damage, and even silent aspiration years after treatment ends.

✨ What feels like recovery months out can unfortunately give way to late RAD, a serious and often unrecognized issue that can develop five or more years later as tissues stiffen and nerves weaken

✨ Early detection and tailored interventions are key to managing RAD and improving life quality.

✨ Speech‑language pathologists (SLPs) can use assessments like video swallow studies (VFSS or FEES) to pinpoint swallowing impairments, then suggest strategies—like swallow exercises.

💜 That’s a wrap on Dysphagia Awareness Month 2025 💜

From myth-busting with Laryn-Jeopardy to amplifying patient voices at the EL-PFDD Meeting on Dysphagia, this month was about education, advocacy, and connection.

🎯 We heard from people living with dysphagia.
🎤 We spoke directly to the FDA.
🧠 We learned with 30 days of swallowing trivia.

And most importantly—we reminded the world that swallowing matters.

Thank you to our amazing community, sponsors, and partners who made this campaign possible. 💪 👄 💙

🌟 Dysphagia Awareness Month: Why It Matters

🌟 Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, affects millions of adults in the U.S. — approximately 9.44 million, to be exact.

Despite this staggering number, only 22.7% of those experiencing symptoms seek help from healthcare professionals.

This lack of awareness can lead to serious health consequences and diminished quality of life.

It’s crucial that we shine a light on this condition, emphasizing the need for education about its signs and symptoms to encourage timely medical intervention.

💪 Support for Patients and Caregivers (Check out these 2 resources

💪 Awareness is not just about diagnosis; it’s also about supporting those affected and their caregivers.

Caregivers often dedicate around 20 hours a week to managing feeding and swallowing tasks, which can significantly impact their ability to work and engage in other activities.

By advocating for increased resources and support, we can help alleviate some of the burdens faced by families dealing with dysphagia.

Together, let’s spread the word and foster a better understanding of this often-overlooked condition!

June is Month!
Back in 2008, the US Congress passed bipartisan legislation declaring the month of June as National , as:
** is difficulty swallowing, which can happen through the mouth, throat, and esophagus (tube connecting throat to the stomach).
** Dysphagia often goes under-reported, under-evaluated, and under-treated.
** Dysphagia not a disease in-and-of-itself. Difficulty swallowing can happen due to many different diseases, disorders, structural differences, and more.
