If you know me, you know that working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) is at the heart of what I do through my business, Better Everyday LLC. One of my favorite places I serve is FRIENDS of Broomfield, Inc.

FRIENDS of Broomfield, Inc. provides life-changing opportunities, community, and daily support for people with disabilities — including the adaptive fitness classes I’m honored to teach twice a week. To help support funding for FRIENDS, I am going to hike a 14er while wearing a weighted vest in the summer of 2026!

Why a weighted vest?
Because many individuals with disabilities carry invisible “extra weight” every day — physical, emotional, and societal challenges most people never see. I’m carrying weight on this mountain to honor the extra weight they carry in life.

This climb symbolizes resilience, hope, community, and the belief that everyone deserves a healthier, stronger future.

The more money we raise, the heavier the weighted vest I carry to the summit:
💲 $1,000 raised → 30 lbs
💲 $5,000 raised → 40 lbs
💲 $10,000 raised → 50 lbs

Nutrition Tip of the Week!

Maintaining liver and kidney health is essential for overall wellness, as these organs are key to detoxification, waste elimination, and metabolic regulation. Here are the best evidence-based strategies to keep both organs functioning optimally

Emphasize:
—Leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables (e.g., broccoli, Brussels sprouts)
—Berries, citrus fruits, apples
—Fatty fish (omega-3s), legumes, and whole grains

Nutrition Tips of the Week!!!

With all of the halloween candy going around right now, it is important to ensure that all that sugar doesn't overwhelm your system. Utilize the following strategies to reduce the negative effects of foods high in sugar:

🥦 1. Eat Sugar After Whole Foods—Consuming fiber, fat, or protein first (e.g., veggies or Greek yogurt before dessert) slows sugar absorption (think of these nutrients as a “metabolic buffer” against glucose spikes).

🥜 2. Pair Sugar with Protein or Fat—On top of eating healthy whole foods before dessert, also consider adding foods like nuts, nut butter, or greek yogurt alongside sweets to reduce the glycemic load.

🚶 3. Light Movement After Eating—A 10–15 minute walk after a sugary meal or dessert helps muscles absorb glucose, reducing blood sugar peaks.

💧 4. Stay Hydrated—Water helps the kidneys excrete excess glucose and maintain balanced blood viscosity, supporting metabolic stability.
