I came across this little guy a few years ago and can’t think of a better messenger of the tidings we need this year. A foraged angel. Just a little driftwood (angels are drifty), glued-on wings, twine belt to keep some secrets as he flies, hand-carved half-smile and closed eyes, seeing what we can’t quite.

All the angels in the good book start off the same way: ‘fear not!’. Maybe their presence was terrifyingly magnificent, or that’s the way we always need to wake up. Out of fear. The invitation into peace.

I think I prefer this messenger, barely more than a few sticks pieced together, to the shining, otherworldly seraphs he’s standing in for. His message is that god loves to show up in the unnoticeable, cast-off things.

From my trembling heart to yours this Christmas, all the foraged wonder I can find. All the joy that breaks through the evidence against it. All the light we can’t yet see.
