👋 Hi, I’m Sarah Moley, L.Ac.
I practice acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in North Boulder and Thornton, CO.

I’m here to support you and guide you to develop a deeper connection with your body, your health, and your well-being. Through working with me you will learn how to listen to and decode the signs and symptoms that your body is showing you. Through this you will develop a deeper ability to care for yourself and your health. I think this is the key to living well.

I specialize in fertility, hormonal health, pain, PTSD, mental health, digestion, sleep, facial acupuncture…and so much more. Acupuncture and TCM can help support you with almost anything you might be experiencing.

I am a NCCAOM board licensed acupuncturist. I have a masters in acupuncture from Southwest Acupuncture College, a masters in clinical psychology from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, and a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College. I’ve been certified in Constitutional Facial Acupuncture: the Wakefield Method, FES flower essence practitioner, shamanic soul retrieval, & 200 hr YTT.

I love to read, watch movies, take long walks, cook good food, spend time with friends and loved ones, climb, dance, and enjoy art when I’m not in the office.

I work with private pay patients in North Boulder at Six Persimmons Apothecary and I work with private pay patients and veterans through the VA in Thornton at Intrepid Bodyworks.

I’d love to work with you! Please reach out with any questions: I’m always happy to answer.

“No Ice?

But I feel so hot” 🥵

Yes. Even when you’re hot—maybe especially when you’re hot—ice is not your friend.

Why?

When consuming iced beverages, the body reacts by raising blood pressure (sympathetic response). Additionally, core temperature decreases, but the body surface does not cool (1,4)

With consumption of ice-cold liquid, you’re diverting circulation to the core from the extremities. This disrupts the body’s ability to cool itself through circulation in the extremities. The sweat response is also decreased (body’s natural cooling mechanism) and hydration is negatively impacted.(3)

IN TCM we say that cold foods and iced beverages tend to weaken the digestive system.

blood flow is also constricted. This leads to symptoms like bloating, loose stools, cramping, fatigue, phlegm /mucus, clotted or painful menstruation, & feelings of heaviness.

Moreover, it has been shown that digestive enzymes function most optimally at a specific temperature range. 98.6 degrees F and above facilitates optimal enzymatic activity for digestion (to a point—a fever can disrupt this) (2)

So, what can you do to stay cool?

A study examining the optimal temperature for rehydration and body temperature regulation found that drinking cool (60 degree F), not cold, tap water was most effective for regulation (3)

Cooling and hydrating foods in TCM

-peppermint 🌿

-cucumber🥒

-watermelon🍉

-spinach🥬

-mung bean🫛

-Kiwi🥝

-Lime🍋‍🟩

-Melon🍈

-Avocado🥑

(Notice a trend? Hint: go for what’s in-season)

Ultimately, though, you want to enjoy your summer as a time of sun, longer days, expansion, & growth.

So, if that cold treat brings you joy it has a place in your summer.

Just make sure the majority of what you’re eating is supportive to your body so that you can feel your best and enjoy your life.

48 hrs of meals as a busy acupuncturist ☼

With many there is an assumption that “dietary changes” means restriction.

For me, a TCM diet is the best I’ve ever eaten, the best I’ve ever felt. It truly tastes so good.

How does this food make me feel?
Does it feel good to eat?
Does it improve or worsen my symptoms?

An acupuncturist or TCM practitioner can help you determine what your imbalances are and what foods to do more of and what foods to do less of.

The majority of your diet should be foods that support and nourish your digestion and body as a whole.

And - everything in moderation; including moderation.

The point is to enjoy your health and live life more fully through that health

Clinical Pearls: “I didn’t even realize I had started my period.”

I love hearing this.
This is when I know we have made it.

Where did we start?
Patients will come in with:
· mild to debilitating cramps
· clotting
· irregular cycle (length)
· spotting
· Mild to severe mood changes around menstruation
· bloating
· digestive irregularity around menstruation
· menstrual migraines/headaches
· infertility
· PCOS/Endometriosis
· Etc.

How do I work with this?
· acupuncture
· herbs
· moxa
· cupping
· electrostimulation
· lifestyle recommendations
· dietary recommendations

With Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine we can change your cycle.

How we accomplish this:
· improved blood flow
· hormone balancing (from the level below hormone production: organ function)
· decreased stress
· improved digestion
· improved sleep

TCM conceptualizes the “Perfect Period” as:
· 28-30 day cycle
· regularity (timing)
· Starts and ends without spotting
· bleeding for 3-5 days
· red color, syrupy consistency
· (not bright red/very dark/brown/purple etc.)
· no clots
· no cramps to mild discomfort
· little to no mood changes
· no breast pain/distension
· neither excessively light or heavy bleeding

This typically takes at least several cycles

Your cycle will likely fluctuate for several months while your body does what it needs to do to find balance. Menstruation is a detoxification pathway.

This takes consistency and trust. But it is oh-so-worth it because your cycle is a vital sign for your overall health.

Even if you’ve always suffered from painful periods/endo/PCOS your cycle can change.

I’ve been there. I now have the “perfect period” most months.

However, if I have a bad month, or deal with a lot of stress, it becomes slightly imperfect. And that tells me where I need to put in the work to get it back.

Chinese Medicine tips for Spring 🌸

Here in Colorado we are having a beautiful spring. These are some TCM tips to help you thrive in the springtime.

One ☞ Eat Seasonally
-green produce, locally sourced, sour and bitter flavors all help the body at this time.

Two ☞ Move Your Body
-this is a great time of year to get out for walks, tai qi, qi gong, outdoor sports, or to try something new like a dance class.
Look for activities that feel energizing and invigorating, rather than exhausting and depleting.

Three ☞ Allergy Care
For allergy sufferers:
-Neti pot/saline rinse daily in the PM to help clear accumulated pollen from the sinuses/nasal cavity
-TCM herbal formulas for allergies
-Acupuncture
-Chrysanthemum & goji berry tea
-gua sha on back of the neck, scalp massage

Four ☞ Get Sunlight Exposure
To help get our daily recommended dose of Vitamin D about 15 mins is recommended.
-Eating foods that are skin protective as more time is spent in the sun to go along with SPF
▹Eat your Colors 🫐🍋🍊🥑🥕🫑🍇🍓🥦🍳🐟

Clinical Pearls: “How would you treat ______________?”

I am often asked how I would treat:

☞Endometriosis
☞PCOS
☞IBS
☞hyper/hypothyroidism
☞Migraines
Etc....

Using acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Answer:

There is no one way I would treat any given Western medical diagnosis.

So how do I work with these patients?

Say five patients were to come in all with the same Western medical diagnosis of fibromyalgia. They would typically all have slightly different Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnoses.

TCM is more nuanced in terms of how it sees the body.
We go through:
☞Digestion & diet
☞Bowel Movements
☞Sleep
☞Energy level
☞Stress/Emotions
And other symptoms including but not limited to pain, sickness, urination, menstruation…etc.

Then we take the pulses which pertain to different Organs and to the state of the Blood and Qi.

Then we look at the tongue which similarly corresponds to the Organs, Blood, Qi, state of the body fluids…etc.

We do this every time you come in.
The goal is that things change .
So your TCM diagnoses will change and evolve with each treatment.

I might treat five people with the same western medical diagnosis five different ways.

No two presentations are exactly the same.

In Chinese Medicine we treat the body how it presents that day.

We balance the imbalances that are currently present.

And each time we move closer to a state of balanced health.

Each patient is unique. Each treatment is unique.
