Coaches say all the time that “athletics teach life skills”. But what does that really mean?

Most often, what they’re really saying is that athletes learn to deal with adversity.

And pressure.

And losing.

But at Reboot Mindfulness our disciplined approach proactively teaches young athletes those “life skills” with positivity.

Reboot teaches:
—> Discipline
—> Focus
—> Resiliency
—> Positivity
—> Sportsmanship

Athletes learn—alongside their teammates, coaches, and parents—what it really means to be a well rounded athlete and they learn how to carry these skills into all aspects of their life, on and off the field.

And the mental fitness skills athletes learn is a first line of defense if mental health issues arise.

On this World Mental Health Day, we celebrate our Reboot athletes, parents, and coaches for taking a proactive approach to their mental fitness.

Reboot Mindfulness for Athletes focuses on invigorating and instilling the joy of sport, creating confidence in self, and tapping into and building the power of team.

The program is designed for all parts of the athlete's journey—from getting into the right state of mind before practice or an event, to refocusing during competition, to reflecting and growing after an event. With a simple to navigate curriculum, even the youngest athletes can find the meditation and mindfulness that they need at the right time, without requiring help from a coach or parent (though coach and parent involvement helps strengthen the experience).

Make your warm up routine fun! Create a pump up playlist to get you in the right mindset before a game, competition, race, or even just practice. Bonus points if you get your team involved and make the playlist collaborative!

Want unlock the mind of a champion? Get into the habit of journaling. You'll be able to track the highs, lows, victories, and lessons learned in this athlete's journal. At the very least, this journal can be a tool for you to get your thoughts out of your head and help your mind and body relax. Get ready to be inspired, motivated, and challenged as you work through the importance of reflecting on your journey as an athlete, both mentally and physically.

Today, give the "five senses exercise" a try. It's a quick and easy exercise to bring you to a mindful state wherever you are.

1. Notice 5 things you can see. Look around and bring attention to 5 things you don't normally notice, like a certain shadow or crack.

2. Notice 4 things you can feel. Think about texture, thickness, weight, etc

3. Notice 3 things you can hear. Take a moment to listen to your surroundings.

4. Notice 2 things you can smell. Try to focus on smells you would typically filter out.

5. Notice 1 thing you can taste. Take a sip of a drink or chew on some gum.

Puzzles are a great way to sharpen the mind, but they’re also a mindfulness practice: Mindful Puzzling. Whether it's a jigsaw puzzle, sudoku, crossword, riddle, or even spot-the-difference, all require some form of mindful focus.

As you're solving, try to reflect on your mind and body. When you're frustrated, how does your body feel? When you've successfully solved a piece, how does your body respond? Does your heart rate elevate? How do you breathe differently throughout the puzzle process?

This reflection will help strengthen your mind/body connection, which is necessary for physical activities as well.

Music has an incredible ability to relieve stress and promote a strong mind-body connection. This is why we place such an emphasis on warm-up playlists or hype up songs to get ready for a big practice. Being a part of the music creation helps to elevate these effects.

Try making music with the singing bowls method. All you need is Tibetan singing bowls or, more realistically, a set of water glasses. By rubbing around the rim of the bowl or glasses, beautiful notes emerge to fill the senses with ease. Stress quickly dissipates as the music fills the air. Give it a try and let us know in the comments what you think!

Is stress getting the best of you? Try using a stress ball to help promote relaxation and calm. Using a stress ball is simple:
1. Squeeze the ball in your left hand for 30 seconds.
2. Pulse the stress ball for 30 seconds.
3. Repeat with the right hand.

The physical act of squeezing a stress ball increases blood flow to the hands, which can help relieve tension. They provide a tactile tool for self-soothing and can help distract your mind from difficult or stressful situations. If we haven't convinced you yet, stress balls promote hand-eye coordination and can help improve fine motor skills, meaning this small exercise can better your athletic ability!

Until mindfulness becomes an everyday practice in your life, it can be difficult to accurately identify how you are feeling. To help with this, work on vocally defining your mood in a particular moment.

Start by focusing on noticing how you're feeling at various points throughout the day. As you look inward to see how you're feeling, try to briefly name your mood and then move on with the day.

You should try to perform these quick checks at least three times a day to start. Each time you pause to check in, it will become much easier to tell how you're feeling.
