Association for Surgical Education - Coordinators of Surgical Education Together we will play an active role in shaping the future of surgical education.

The Surgical Education Coordinators Committee is an organization whose mission is to develop resources to support, educate, and inspire student coordinators in surgery. This committee addresses the educational needs of medical students in surgery and is focused on developing effective plans and goals to make the clerkship successful. The Committee provides helpful information and guidance to coordinators and enables them to get involved in group discussions on issues surrounding medical student education. The Committee meets during the Annual Meeting and conducts business via e-mail and conference calls throughout the year.

The 2021 Association for Surgical Education Coordinator Program track will be offered Monday, April 26-Thursday, 29, 2021 in conjunction with the ASE Annual Meeting Thursday, April 29 - Saturday, May 1. 2021. The ASE CCSE Program Track includes the popular joint clerkship director-coordinator "Troubleshooting Your Clerkship" workshop, discussions on pivoting curriculum with COVID-19, evaluations, matching into surgical residency in COIVD-19, learning technologies, as well as, a special professional development session led by Lisa M. Laughman, LMSW, ACSW on "Recognizing and Tending to Burnout & Overwhelm."

This session will explore the elements of burnout, and how burnout impacts our capacity to navigate the day-to-day life challenges that just keep coming at us during this pandemic. An overview of a resilience training model, and a 6-word framework, will be provided to help navigate through these tough moments. This session will also include a focus on the importance of “completing your stress cycle” and having a solid stress mitigation protocol, a.k.a. self-care practices.

The ASE 2021 Annual Meeting will offer focused presentations on surgical education through a dynamic platform for education, networking, and CME. Earlier today Penn State Surgery launched a youtube channel, Quarantine Surgical Education, providing free, high quality surgical lectures for medical students. Currently, the content consists of Penn State lectures typically provided during the course of the clerkship. They hope to increase the volume of lectures available by crowdsourcing for and then vetting material.
