We’ve all been waiting through the long winter months to finally dust off the clubs and get back out on the course. But if your winter consisted more of sitting by the fire than practicing your backswing, jumping straight into 18 holes can be a shock to the system.

Golf looks relaxed, but it requires an incredible amount of explosive torque, core stability, and rotational flexibility. If your spine and hips are locked up from winter hibernation, your body will compensate—leading to that dreaded lower back stiffness or a hijacked swing plane.

Here is how chiropractic care helps you shake off the winter rust and play your best game yet:

Restores Rotational Mobility: A fluid swing requires maximum rotation through your thoracic spine and hips. Chiropractic adjustments ensure your joints are moving freely so you can hit your full turn without restriction.

Improves Balance & Body Awareness: Proper alignment keeps your nervous system firing optimally, giving you better proprioception (body awareness) for a more consistent, repeatable swing.

1. Master Your Pack Weight
Carrying a heavy backpack incorrectly causes severe neck, shoulder, and back strain. Always place your heaviest items centered and closest to your spine. Most importantly, buckle the hip belt—it should carry 70% to 80% of the weight, taking the pressure off your spine and putting it on your hips.

2. Use Trekking Poles
Trekking poles aren't just for rugged terrain; they drastically reduce the impact on your knees, ankles, and lower back, especially on steep downhills. By distributing your weight across four points of contact, you save your joints from repetitive stress and vastly improve your balance.

3. Do a 5-Minute Trailhead Warm-Up
Heading straight up a peak with cold, stiff muscles is a recipe for a strain. Before hitting the trail, spend 5 minutes doing these active movements using your car bumper or trekking poles for balance:

Leg Swings: Swing each leg forward and backward 15 times to loosen up tight hip flexors and hamstrings.

Bodyweight Squats: Do 10 to 12 slow, controlled squats to wake up your glutes and quads for the elevation gain.

Torso Twists: Stand wide and gently rotate your upper body side-to-side for 1 minute to lubricate your spine and relieve lower back tightness.

Ankle Circles: Roll each ankle clockwise and counter-clockwise 10 times to prep them for uneven terrain and rocks.
