There are a lot of tools available for people who are blind or have vision loss. Ms. Jean demonstrates a device to crack an egg....but it's not quite perfect....

Lighthouse's Lumination store sells kitchen gadgets, magnifiers, writing guides and many of things that are useful for individuals with vision loss.

πŸŽƒπŸ‘©β€πŸ³πŸ“ Cooking Without Looking – Halloween Edition! πŸŒπŸ§ƒβœ¨

Our teens got their spooky chef hats on during our overnight lock-in! With help from our amazing new team member Laura, they whipped up mummy hot dogs and sausages, and bravely tackled candy corn-dipped strawberries that turned into the ultimate Pinterest fail πŸ˜‚ β€” but we had a blast anyway!

The kitchen fun didn’t stop there β€” thanks to the generous blender donations, each teen got to make their own fruit or chocolate banana smoothie, then take a blender home! Several have already reported they’re now making breakfast smoothies daily β€” talk about skills that stick!

Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this part of the night a delicious success!

Happy Anniversary to Ms. Courtney who works with the Lighthouse youth!

What a full-circle moment! Our visit to the Fruitville Grove Pumpkin Festival wasn’t just a fall outing β€” it was a celebration of one incredible year since Ms. Courtney began leading the Lighthouse Transition teens! 🧑

Exactly one year ago, this festival was the very first event we shared together β€” and since then, our journey has been filled with learning, laughter, and unforgettable adventures that turned a group of teens into a true Lighthouse family. πŸ’«

Here’s just a glimpse of what we’ve experienced together this year:
🍳 Cooking Without Looking sessions
🎀 Music classes & karaoke nights
🌊 Beach trips and the Self-Advocacy Beach Blast
πŸ¦‡ Overnight Lock-In with biology, bat lessons and shark dissecting
🎭 Work-Based Learning at the Manatee Performing Arts Center

🐾 Humane Society WBLE & career exploration
🎒 Busch Gardens & Adventure Island theme park outings

πŸ›» Monster Truck shows
πŸŽ“ USF Tampa, State College of Florida, and Full Sail University tours
⛡️ Deep Sea boat excursion with Tampa Bay Watch
πŸ’’ ComiCon
πŸ•΄ Jump-In-Fun & Monster Arcade

Every event brought growth, courage, laughter, and connection β€” and every smile tells a story of progress. πŸ’›

As we celebrate this milestone, we’re reminded that:
β€œThe roots of true achievement lie in the will to become the best that you can become.” 🌱

Here’s to another year of adventures, empowerment, and endless possibilities! ✨

Our Story

The Lighthouse was officially established as a not for profit agency in 1985 by a group of people who themselves, were visually impaired. Together with the support of area eye specialists and community donors, these volunteers spent countless hours to secure funding and the 501(c) 3 status for the agency originally known as Mana-Sota Lighthouse for the Blind.
