Karen Bonn, Founder of Restorative Medical, Retires After 29 Years

November 2, 2020 (Brandenburg, KY) –Restorative Medical announced the retirement of its founder and long-time director, Karen Bonn, after 29 years.

The idea for the company began when Karen, a former Director of Nursing in long-term care, grew frustrated over the commonality of the life-altering – yet preventable – physical deformities she saw in nursing homes. In 1991, in the basement of her family’s home, she began developing a new approach to contracture management that would revolutionize the treatment of lost range of motion. Three months later, she incorporated Restorative Medical, Inc. (RMI) and moved into her first commercial rental space. Over the next 24 years, she developed the company’s signature Flex Technology™, along with many of its hero product lines such as NeuroFlex®, Safe, RestAir, Restorative, and BendEase. Karen was joined by her son, Brian King, who became co-owner in June of 2007. RMI was acquired by Greenwood Marketing, LLC, and was rebranded as Restorative Medical in November of 2015.

During her career, Karen – a registered nurse and Certified Orthotic Fitter – conducted countless patient consultations and spoke to audiences at the state, national, and international level. Most notably, she was invited to speak as a guest lecturer at Beijing University, and also to the Physical Medicine and Rehab Residents at the Tbilisi Medical School in the Republic of Georgia.

Additionally, Karen has authored the “DON’s Corner” for Long Term Care Management Magazine from 1995 until 1999, has served on numerous advisory committees, and was President of the National Association for the Enhancement of Patient Care. Karen is a current member of the Kentucky District Export Council (DEC) and was nominated for Business Woman of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers.

“I credit my success to the relationships I’ve built with my customers and suppliers over the years. I am very proud of the groundbreaking work done to improve the lives, health, and dignity of Restorative patients and their families,” says Karen Bonn.

Karen lives in Brandenburg, KY, where she enjoys being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her future plans include golf, travel, and devoting more time to church work.

Strong nursing care helps to reinforce therapy.

When our disabled or elderly patients are admitted to either an acute or sub-acute rehab, the focus is typically on therapy. This is appropriate because these patients have probably just spent time in an acute stay hospital for something like stroke, pneumonia, a fracture, surgery, urinary tract infection, or injury from a fall. Since they likely spent most of their hospitalization in bed and are now weaker than before they were admitted, they need therapy to get them back to at least their prehospital level of activity and hopefully better.

The side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have created an entirely new challenge for not just the sick but also for those who did not contract the virus but have had forced immobility during quarantine. We have to remind ourselves that COVID-19 is not the only thing that threatens our residents’ health and welfare — they have other conditions that must also be addressed on an ongoing basis. https://www.mcknights.com/marketplace/the-unintended-consequences-of-covid-19-in-long-term-care/
