For years, my relationship with food was an internal battle of using food for comfort → judging myself and my body → restricting → rebelling against the restrictions → and repeating the cycle, over and over.

I was caught in the belief that if I found the right plan, was disciplined enough, and achieved the thin ideal, then I would be happy.

But the thinner I got, the more anxious and unhealthy I became. The more “perfect” my eating looked, the more disconnected I felt from myself and from the people I loved. None of it was sustainable.

Here’s what I understand now, after years of academic study and liberating myself from diet culture:

💛 Long-lasting change comes from:
love and care not fear,
understanding your behavior,
reclaiming your autonomy to choose what is right for you and
rebuilding trust in yourself and your body’s wisdom.

It’s not about willpower, it's about alignment.

Let me break it down –

The world is full of messages telling you exactly what to do to be healthy:

Eat this.
Not that.
Track this.
Follow this plan.

So your brain thinks:
“If I could just take the right actions, I’d feel better.”

But here’s what gets left out:

Your thoughts shape your feelings.
Your feelings drive your actions.

If your thoughts sound like:

“I’m so behind.”
“I should be doing better.”
“I have to get this right.”

Those create discouragement, pressure, overwhelm.

And from those feelings?
You procrastinate.
You burn out.
You shut down.

Not because you’re lazy.

But because your thoughts and feelings were never aligned with productive action to begin with.

Most goals stay stuck at the surface.

“I want to eat healthy.”
“I want to manage my blood pressure.”
“I want to move more.”

But that’s not what you actually want.

You want to feel (i.e. confident, competent, free, strong, at ease…)

When you explore “why this matters” several layers deep, something shifts.

You move out of fear.

You create understanding about what you truly care about.

And when you begin cultivating that feeling now, instead of waiting for some future moment of success, that creates intrinsic motivation - the fuel for sustainable habits.

Try this today:

Ask yourself:
“What will it mean for me to achieve this goal?”

Then ask again:
“And what will that mean?”

Keep going until you hit the emotional core.

But it can’t keep you going.

When your motivation sounds like:
“I need to fix this.”
“I can’t mess this up.”
“It’s now or never.”

That’s not inspiration. That’s your nervous system in fight-or-flight.

And fight-or-flight was designed for short bursts of energy to avoid danger, not everyday habits.

If your health goals feel heavy…
If every choice feels high-stakes…

It’s because fear is an ineffective motivator.

Lasting change requires something different:
Motivation rooted in care for yourself.
Aligned with what matters most.
