One of the first questions I ask parents “did your child have a good crawl with both legs and arms working together” if they say no, I call in my OT friend Brittany at Achieving Milestones, LLC. Crawling is one of the first signs of both hemispheres of our brain working together. Which is critical for language and literacy development!
🚼 Let’s talk about crawling — and why it still matters.
Crawling plays a CRITICAL role in early development:
✨ Builds communication between both sides of the brain
💪 Strengthens the core, shoulders, and hands
👀 Supports visual tracking and eye coordination
🧠 Helps integrate primitive reflexes !!!!
🧭 Lays the foundation for walking, posture, and fine motor skills
Milestones are meant to guide development, not rush it. 🙌🏼✨
Just because crawling was removed from the list from CDC doesn’t mean it’s no longer important. Like WOW how can they even….. 🤯
ACTIVITIES TO TRY 🎉
— Place favorite toys just out of reach to motivate movement
— Create a pillow or couch-cushion obstacle course to move over
— Use tunnels, pop-up tents, or cardboard boxes
— Get down on the floor and crawl together
— Roll a ball slowly away and encourage baby to chase it for endurance
Fun fact: you actually want your baby to crawl for 2-3 months before walking, crazy right! 😆
