💡Therapy Tip Tuesday! 💡

Key Self-Advocacy Skills for Children

1. Saying “No” Appropriately
Teach verbal, sign, or AAC versions of “no”

🌟Reinforce when used respectfully—even if the answer is ultimately "not now"

2. Requesting a Break
Teach how to ask for a break before behaviors escalate

🌟Use visuals, break cards, or gestures as needed

3. Making Choices
Offer structured choices (e.g., “Do you want crayons or markers?”)

🌟Expand from preferred items to task order, people, and settings

4. Expressing Likes and Dislikes
Teach the child to label preferences: “I like…” / “I don’t like…”

🌟Respect their input to build trust and confidence

5. Asking for Help
Teach a functional way to request assistance

🌟Reinforce even when they attempt to ask (not just perfect forms)

6. Reporting Problems or Discomfort
Practice telling an adult if something is wrong (e.g., “It’s too loud,” “He hit me”)

🌟Model and role-play safe ways to report issues

7. Identifying Emotions
Use visuals, mirrors, or videos to help recognize feelings

🌟Connect emotions with appropriate actions (e.g., “When I’m mad, I can squeeze a ball”)

8. Using Accommodations
Teach the child to ask for sensory tools, headphones, or quiet spaces

🌟Reinforce when they advocate for these supports

9. Setting Boundaries
Practice polite ways to decline touch, attention, or participation

🌟Celebrate boundary-setting behavior as a success

10. Participating in Decisions
Involve the child in goal setting when appropriate

🌟Ask: “What do you want to work on?” or “How do you want to do this?”

🍦✨ We had a sweet time partnering with Great Start Livingston at their Summer Playdate! ✨🍦

Our team loved connecting with families, helping kids create their very own ice cream-themed bookmarks, and giving out yummy ice cream cups!🍨📚

Smiles and summer fun all around!☀️💙

Hard to believe this was 11 years ago! Since then,
Home Health Care has added a 2nd home and a bunch of apartments to the Residential Program. We are all about addressing unmet needs in the community.

💡Therapy Tip! 💡

We know that progress starts with trying. That’s why it’s so important to reinforce the effort, not just the final result.

👏 Clapping when a child attempts a new word
👍 Encouraging when they reach for the toothbrush
🎉 Smiling and saying “nice try!” even if they don’t finish the task

These small moments matter. They build confidence, motivation, and trust—and they’re how long-term growth happens.

Progress doesn’t happen all at once—and that’s okay. Reinforcement doesn’t have to be over the top—your presence, attention, and encouragement are often the best rewards.
