Menthol activates cold receptors (TRPM8) in the skin and nerve endings, producing a cooling sensation. This cold sensation is transmitted through the nervous system, effectively “distracting” or reducing the perception of pain signals. Menthol also inhibits the activity of sodium ion channels, which play a crucial role in transmitting chronic pain signals. It possesses anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the release of local inflammatory factors and thereby indirectly alleviating pain.
Rapid onset: Menthol takes effect within minutes after topical application, making it suitable for relieving acute pain. Short-acting analgesia: The pain-relieving effect typically lasts 30 minutes to several hours, ideal for managing mild to moderate pain.
