💜🩺

Today we’re taking a look at some of the areas in the clinic that certified veterinary technicians and assistants help with.

💊 Pharmacy 💊
When you call for a prescription, or you’re here for an appointment and medication is needed, it is often the veterinary technician who fulfills that request. Our veterinary assistants also help in pharmacy with medications, packages, shipping, and much more!

🩻 X-Ray 🩻
Certified Veterinary Technicians are responsible for taking x-rays of patients. They must be knowledgeable in patient parameters, positioning, safety, and delivery of a radiograph for multiple different situations. Whether it be a joint, an abdomen, or a chest view they must understand the specific needs of the patient and the doctor to ensure an appropriate image. Veterinary assistants help with restraint and positioning, as well as safety for both the patient and staff.

💤 Sedation 💤
It sometimes happens that your pet might need sedation. Under veterinarian supervision, certified veterinary technicians are responsible for helping to administer sedation and monitoring your pet during the procedure. They are required to be confident with their skill set and alert the doctor to any changes in the pet”s status. At the end of the procedure, certified veterinary technicians will reverse the sedation and help your pet to recover with the aide of our veterinary assistants.

🌡️ Post-op Care & TPR 🌡️
Certified Veterinary Technicians monitor your pet’s recovery after surgery or during hospitalization by performing a TPR. With the help of our veterinary assistants holding your pet safely, they will check their Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration to make sure everything is going well. They are responsible for reporting these findings to the veterinarian in case changes in their treatment plan need to be made.

🩺 💜

We know that it can be scary sometimes to have that nail trim or blood draw, but at IVS we try to minimize each patients stress by training our technician and assistant nursing staff with Fear Free practices.

Of course, a little baby food and cheese doesn’t hurt either. 😊 🧀

Under the direction of a veterinarian, technicians are responsible for many things during a tech appointment, including:

💅🏼 Nail trims
🩸 Blood work
👂 Ear cleaning
💉 Follow up vaccinations
🌸Instructional immunotherapy
And much, much more!

Our assistants are always there ready to help add their Fear Free handling skills to make it a safe and happy appointment!

Thank you for always treating our patients with kindness and respect. ♥️

🩺 💜

This week we are celebrating both our Certified Veterinary Technicians and our Veterinary Assistants!

🐾 What is a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT)?

CVTs are individuals who have received education and training at an accredited college and/or on-the-job training to a level required by the State of Wisconsin, and they have successfully passed both the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) as well as a state licensing exam. They are a fully licensed technician that must continue to earn 15 hours of continuing education in order to renew this license every other year.

CVTs are required to be knowledgeable in many different areas of veterinary medicine, such as:

💊 Pharmacy
🩺 Surgical assisting
😷 Anesthesia and monitoring
🩻 Radiography
🦷 Dentistry
🩸 Phlebotomy and Lab Services
🐾 Sample Collection
🦷 Dental Radiography
🐕 Animal Nursing Care
🚨 Emergency Medicine
💉 Administering injections
😊 Communicating With Clients

Their dedication and compassion for each individual patient knows no bounds and we are lucky to have 10 certified veterinary technicians at IVS.

🐾 What is a Veterinary Assistant?

A veterinary assistant is an individual that has received on-the-job training or who has attended a certified training school but has not yet taken the VTNE. They may also be in the progress of obtaining their veterinary technician certification or waiting for their technician schooling to begin. At IVS we have 3 such team members that are working toward that technician certification.

Veterinary Assistants are a vital part of our clinic. They help with:

🐈 Patient handling
🐩 Patient Care
🙋🏽‍♀️Assisting the doctor and technician
🩸Laboratory Collection & Shipping
😊 Client Communication
📋 Inventory assistance
💊 Pharmacy
💖 Housekeeping
🦄 Assisting rehab staff
👍🏼 Learning new skills toward CVT certification

They keep us up and running in all areas of the clinic. We would not be able to work as efficiently as a team without the help of our amazing veterinary assistants.

A cracked window is not enough to prevent heatstroke when the weather turns warm. Parking in the shade and leaving all of the windows open is still not enough. Please don't fall prey to this false notion.

If you think your dog is suffering from heatstroke, here are a few things to do:
- Stop playing/walking immediately and get them in the shade.
- If there’s no vomiting and they are conscious, offer cool water to drink.
- Run the A/C in the car (on the way to the vet) on high.
- If they are severely affected, dunk them in the coldest water you can find. There used to be an old wives’ tale about not using ice water, but that’s been debunked. Ice away.
- Don’t cover the dog in a wet towel as that can insulate and keep heat in. Cold running water or an ice bath are best.
- Make sure they have shade and fresh water if left outside.
- Most importantly: Head to the vet as fast as you legally/safely can.
