This cookie season, please remember: Girl Scout cookies are for HUMANS only.

The sugar, chocolate, (and general deliciousness) should not be shared with your furry, feathered, or scaled friends.

(But feel free to PM me if you need to know where you can buy girl scout cookies. 🤣)

Questions (and complaints) about tear staining in dogs is something I hear frequently. That rusty brown coloring takes over the hair at the dog's inner eyes. But what causes it?

Most of the time tear staining is normal and not a medical concern (if your dog has a lot of "goop" or you are concerned, please check with your veterinarian). Tear staining occurs when a chemical called porphyrin, a breakdown product of blood in the tears, interacts with the light and is oxidized. This causes a brownish stain of the hair at the inner aspect of the eye that "dyes" the fur.

I strongly advise skipping over most of the over-the-counter products available to "treat" tear staining. Many of these products contain an antibiotic (tylosin).
The antibiotic is unnecessary (and could contribute to antibiotic resistance) because it is NOT a bacteria problem. Plus, many of these products don't specify how much antibiotic is in them - so the dose could be wrong for your pet.

Here's what I recommend instead:
Gentle daily washing of this area of your pet’s fur. All you need is warm water and a paper towel, cotton ball, washcloth, or even a soft toothbrush to gently comb the area.

TICK CHECK! Who’s seeing ticks? We’re still seeing them!

Fleas can live indoors, protected from the cold, and ticks can be active at temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure to get a good tick check in after rolling through those crunchy fall leaves! 🍂

I recommend year-round flea and tick prevention to help. ❤️

Above and beyond being a CVT, certified veterinary technicians can choose to pursue additional education and credentialing in different areas of veterinary medicine, such as:

🐕Animal Rehabilitation
🚨 Emergency Medicine
🦷 Dentistry
💜Palliative and Hospice Care

We have three CVTs at IVS who have earned certification through an accredited school in the area of Veterinary Rehabilitation and Massage Therapy—Dani, Erica, and Vicky.

We would like to give a big shout out to our entire technician and assistant staff as we finish out this week! We really appreciate all your hard work and dedication to IVS and our patients. Thank you! ♥️

💜🩺

Today we’re taking a look at some of the areas in the clinic that certified veterinary technicians and assistants help with.

💊 Pharmacy 💊
When you call for a prescription, or you’re here for an appointment and medication is needed, it is often the veterinary technician who fulfills that request. Our veterinary assistants also help in pharmacy with medications, packages, shipping, and much more!

🩻 X-Ray 🩻
Certified Veterinary Technicians are responsible for taking x-rays of patients. They must be knowledgeable in patient parameters, positioning, safety, and delivery of a radiograph for multiple different situations. Whether it be a joint, an abdomen, or a chest view they must understand the specific needs of the patient and the doctor to ensure an appropriate image. Veterinary assistants help with restraint and positioning, as well as safety for both the patient and staff.

💤 Sedation 💤
It sometimes happens that your pet might need sedation. Under veterinarian supervision, certified veterinary technicians are responsible for helping to administer sedation and monitoring your pet during the procedure. They are required to be confident with their skill set and alert the doctor to any changes in the pet”s status. At the end of the procedure, certified veterinary technicians will reverse the sedation and help your pet to recover with the aide of our veterinary assistants.

🌡️ Post-op Care & TPR 🌡️
Certified Veterinary Technicians monitor your pet’s recovery after surgery or during hospitalization by performing a TPR. With the help of our veterinary assistants holding your pet safely, they will check their Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration to make sure everything is going well. They are responsible for reporting these findings to the veterinarian in case changes in their treatment plan need to be made.
