There are three reasons:
1. Placement: it's important that your pregnancy is located in your uterus before you take the abortion pill. An ultrasound confirms a pregnancy isn't ectopic (located somewhere it's not supposed to be)

2. Gestational Age: 50% of women don't accurately recall the first day of their last period. The FDA has only approved the abortion pill for up to 10 weeks, so for your safety, you need to be sure that you are in that window.

3. Viability: 30% of pregnancies end in a miscarriage and most of those happen within the first trimester. If you're pregnancy isn't still growing, there is no need to spend money on abortion pills.
