I decided to become a therapist for several reasons:

- For starters, when I took my first psychology course in 2012, I couldn't believe that I didn't have this information earlier and I wanted others to have it too.
- I truthfully didn't see enough therapist that looked like me.
- I wanted to show other men that they don't have to trade in their masculinity in order to fully express their emotions.
- I realized that many people haven't been provided support and guidance to handle difficult and challenging situations and I personally wanted to be someone that could help.
- I thought that I could empathize, convey information, and provide a perspective and alternative approaches that others would be receptive to.

I still believe to this day that this is one of the best decisions I could have ever made. If you see this, let this be your reminder that therapy is for everyone.

Its great when you are able to be a layer of accountability for your partner. When things can get challenging is when you are the only source of accountability for them.

As a therapist, I encourage my clients to seek accountability from different sources for different areas of their life. Those sources can be both personal and professional. Professionally, it can be a therapist, trainer, nutritionist, business coach, or career mentor. Personally it can be, a church group, friend accountability group, facebook group, or even a book club. It's best when you can identify accountability outside of your partner for each dimension (6) of wellness.

I had a really good discussion about this in one of my therapy sessions. What are your thoughts?

When having an argument or a disagreement, 'why' questions typically cause the other person to feel that they have to defend their point of view, actions, or character as a whole. In fact, by doing this, you typically get a lower quality answer from the person you are questioning.

Instead, here are some alternatives:
- “What made you decide that?”
- “When did we/you…”

When trying to communicate with someone it's best to avoid distractions. Cursing is a distraction. Yelling is also a distraction. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, we are so focused on being right, rather than listening. Distractions like these are typically used to add emphasis to your statements. If that's what you need to get your point across. You're doing it wrong. In these moments, the goal is to strive for poise.

I work with many clients that don't always realize their worth. It's truly my pleasure to help them realize just how much they're worth via therapy. Once you realize your value, knowing how to advocate for yourself effectively is super important.

It's also important to know that these types of responses are NOT from one session with me. Generally, therapy is not a "one session fix everything" type of intervention. The more you go, the more you'll grow.

*Side bar*: A lot of people don't know that before I became a therapist, I studied Human Resource Management via an MPS in HRM, and my undergrad is in Business Management and Economics. I definitely use this knowledge in therapy sessions. 😉

Part III

The word has been the ultimate guidance for all situations and scenarios. The word has also encouraged me to seek understanding via books in all areas of my life. Using and understanding the scriptures has created such a strong foundation for me as a husband, therapist, and father.

Part II

There was something so special about making sure our minds and spirits were aligned before engaging with each other visually on our wedding day. To me, it ensured that we both knew what was most important on this day.

This Valentine's day I felt reminded of this day and I'm grateful for my life partner. Her love, her grace, her smile, her willingness to engage with me through it all. I love you Ariane.
