When people learn I’m a midwife they always say “awww you must love babies so much!” And while I think they’re totally awesome little dudes, my passion and commitment and love for this work is all about their parents. There’s nothing better than THIS moment.

May we turn our tears into strength, our thoughtlessness into care for others.

May we feel the joy of meeting new souls, holding fresh new humans in our arms, and may we use those same arms to hold our communities (close and international) safe. My liberation is your liberation and I will fight for you the way I would fight for myself.

✨BIG NEWS ✨
We are over the moon 🌖 with excitement to announce that Jenny Rebecca McLaughlin CNM is joining Cosmos Midwifery as our newest Midwifery Fellow!

Jenny Rebecca, a graduate of Yale School of Nursing, has been an integral part of the Cosmos family for quite some time, serving as a birth assistant, lactation consultant, doula, and certified Havening practitioner.
In addition to her fellowship at Cosmos, Jenny Rebecca will also be splitting her time with a hospital position out of state, further expanding her skills and experience. At Cosmos, she will be focusing on office visits and attending births alongside Chloë and Jenna.

We love her so much!!!

On the 2 year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade, I just want to remind everyone that I am passionately, furiously, fervently pro-choice.

I’m pro-choice because as a healthcare provider it is NEVER my right to make a choice for my patients. Someone declining my recommendation to receive a vaccine? Their choice. Someone asking for more ultrasounds that I recommend? Their choice. Someone planning to carry a pregnancy to term even if, were I living their life, I would terminate the pregnancy? THEIR CHOICE. Someone planning to terminate for a reason I myself would not???? THEIR CHOICE!

I believe life begins with intention. Nitpicking things like when life begins, what instances can grant you an abortion (like r**e or in**st), or what type of procedure is completed is about nothing other than controlling the people attempting to have abortions. In the end, I simply don’t care. If it is your choice about your body, I will support it.

When I had an abortion no one second guessed me, no one made me explain myself. And when I chose to have a homebirth no one that I was working with made me explain why I would choose that or recite the research on homebirth safety. If I were to choose not to donate a kidney to a cousin who needed one to survive, NO ONE CAN LEGALLY FORCE ME. That is a fact! US law does not allow one person’s body to be forced into a medical procedure to save another person (McFall v. Shimp).

None of what I’m saying is new or original or a surprise, but here I have to say it again. Abortion is only up to the person who will experience it in their body. That’s it.

When I lie down to sleep, and when I hold my children close, my thoughts go to those who cannot.
How do we come back from this? I know that hope is a muscle, and I try to strengthen it, but I don't know how we can heal the harm that has been done.

I put my hands out to welcome a baby into the world and I think about those being born this minute in Gaza. Are they warm? Are they free from pain? Are they hungry? How do we heal the hearts of the people left behind after such suffering?

The would like you to not stress today, everything is going to be ok. For us. For the white people living on stolen land, be it in North America or elsewhere.

But we, the white people ignoring or excusing immense suffering, we will not be all right. eventually, the Palestinian people will heal, but we will never heal from causing such harm. Our lives are darker now, our hearts a little harder, our souls a little smaller.

Yes, I will keep living my life. I will keep attending births, smiling at my children on the playground, cooking a large dinner for my extended family on this day celebrating genocide. But I will be struggling twice as hard every day for the rest of my life to make up for what has been done in my role in it.
Today that means giving more than double the amount of money I spent on this meal to land back organizations. it means sending hardcopy letters to our government demanding a permanent ceasefire now. It means continuing to give a tithe of my earnings to black and indigenous Midwifery student scholarships. It means educating myself on all of the genocides, currently occurring across the globe, and taking it upon myself to do the work of figuring out how to commit myself to protesting them with my money, my voice, my time, and my heart.
