🥒 Let’s Talk Pickles! 🥒
Did you know there’s actually a BIG difference between a pickled pickle and a fermented pickle?
Most store-bought pickles are made with vinegar. They’re tasty, crunchy, and shelf-stable, but they’re technically “pickled,” not fermented.
Fermented pickles, on the other hand, are made with just salt water, cucumbers, spices, and time. Natural beneficial bacteria grow during the fermentation process and create that tangy, complex flavor that old-fashioned pickles are known for!
The coolest part?
Those live cultures can help support gut health by adding beneficial probiotics to your diet. A healthy gut can support digestion, immune health, and overall wellness and honestly, fermented pickles just taste AMAZING.
Making your own is surprisingly simple:
🥒 Fresh cucumbers
🧄 Garlic
🌿 Dill
🧂 Salt
💧 Water
Pack everything into a clean jar, cover with salt brine, keep the cucumbers submerged, and let nature do the work for several days to a couple weeks depending on the flavor you like!
The flavor changes as they ferment, fresh and mild at first, then more tangy and sour over time. It’s one of those kitchen projects that feels a little magical.
If you’ve never tried making fermented pickles before, don’t be intimidated! It’s affordable, fun, and a great way to connect with traditional food preparation.
And once you taste a homemade fermented pickle… there’s no going back 😄
