Elderberry is a popular natural remedy for many conditions. However, some individuals should NOT use elderberry products.
⚠️ Elderberry may lower blood pressure.If you take medication for high blood pressure, the increased effect could be harmful.
⚠️ Elderberry may increase immune system activity. Individuals with autoimmune disease (such as Lupus Rheumatoid Arthritis) should not take elderberry. Also individuals with organ transplants should avoid elderberry.
⚠️ Elderberry can be a diuretic. It may not be suitable for individuals who are taking certain medications (such as those meant to increase urination).
⚠️ If you are taking any medications, be sure to consult with your provider prior to taking elderberry supplements as it can interact with certain medications. If you decide you would like to take elderberry, work with your provider to determine the right dosage for you.
But is it safe to take elderberry when you’re pregnant? The short answer is, we don’t know. There is no scientific data on the use of elderberry products during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is recommended to speak with your provider and use your best judgment for you and your unborn baby. It is NOT recommended in early pregnancy during development stages as there is information linking to birth defects.
