Every day brings its own battles. Like here on this ramp each day when we go swimming is when Don starts talking to himself out loud 'we got this, here we go!'. Jameson usually sits there cheering him on or holding the door for us. It's incredible seeing flashes of Dons determination as he faces the challenge of moving his body each day. Love

Interactions between the generations!
While I'm physically gathering 6-8 people (pushing wheelchairs), it means the first people brought to our boxing geoup have to wait while I grab more boxers. It's lovely having these mini-eddyRT staffers who get to play other games with the group while I am getting more participants!

We are not allowed to have favorites, buuuuuuuuut..... Chuck Jager was one of our first Veterans who moved into the Oregon Veterans Home in Lebanon. He made recreation therapy look easy. When most disabled Veterans would balk their heads and refuse to try a new recreation intervention because they feel like they "can't" do it like they used to before, Chuck would say "Let's do it!". He tried painting, cards games and Wii bowling all with only the use of one side of his body. Helping clients get their mindset in the right place is half the battle to finding the right intervention that will help them thrive in life!

Every Wednesday you can find a Recreation Therapist, a Coast Guard Veteran and sometimes an 8-9 year old swimming in the warm pool in Lebanon, Oregon. This Veteran knows what he wants out of life and chases it, it is a joy to hear him express his words of thanks for getting him out and moving. Right now, I run my business with my Chevy Tahoe. The long term goal is to get a wheelchair accessible van someday, so I can enjoy providing Recreation Therapy Services for people in wheelchairs.

It's a unique profession, that is not well known in Oregon and sooooooooo I hope I can help you all see this amazing service and how it can improve how we are interconnected as humans and we can help each other improve; not letting our abilities prevent us from thriving.

This is where I come from. Borjesson family fishermen. Grandpa was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and what did he do? He chose to take his sons to Alaska to go fishing and create priceless moments, doing what they love. No wonder I became a Recreation Therapist. What a healthy and admirable way to live. Instead of choosing to wallow in self-pity they got up and found the therapy that would work for them, recreation. On the way home from the 3rd trip to Alaska, Grandpa turned to my dad on the plane and asked "where we headed?" Dad said "we are heading home from fishing in Alaska". Grandpa asked "Did we have a good time?". This was recreation therapy for not just my Grandpa, but the whole family.

Jab, jab, cross! Look at this Veteran get up and go! It's very inspiring to get to help these guys get their bodies moving. Finding that purpose to get up and go every day is the purpose of recreation therapy!

When one of my clients showed up to our recreation therapy group with the santa hat and green boxing mitts , I had to get a selfie with him. This guy is fighting back his disability, full of joy, for everyone to see!

When I wrap up my RT groups, I ask each participant to share one thing they are thankful for from the last week and something they are thankful for now or in the future. Some roll their eyes, but most yell out "this group!"
Studies show how powerful the brain is when it focuses on what it's thankful for!
