Wellness Wednesday 💪🦴

The shoulder relies heavily on its ligaments for stability, especially at the AC (acromioclavicular) joint and the glenohumeral (GH) joint. These ligaments help control motion, maintain proper joint alignment, and protect the shoulder during lifting, reaching, and athletic movements. When shoulder ligaments are strong and supported by surrounding muscles, they reduce injury risk and allow for smooth, powerful, pain-free motion.

Looking for a gentle shoulder stretch that won’t aggravate stiffness or pain?

Using a physio ball on a table for support, slowly reach one hand forward and allow your chest to drop down until you feel a light, comfortable stretch through the shoulder. A controlled, pain-free motion is key—this stretch should feel easy, not forced.

This is a great option for anyone dealing with limited shoulder mobility or stiffness, especially when guided by a physical therapist to ensure proper form and comfort.

Your shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in your body, and it relies on ligaments to stay stable while you lift, throw, or reach. Here are the two key joints:

1️⃣ Acromioclavicular (AC) Joint – where your collarbone meets the top of your shoulder:

AC Ligament: Holds the collarbone and shoulder blade together.

Coracoclavicular Ligaments: Strong bands that keep the collarbone in place and prevent it from moving too much.

2️⃣ Glenohumeral (GH) Joint – the main ball-and-socket shoulder joint:

Superior, Middle, & Inferior GH Ligaments: Wrap around the joint to prevent the shoulder from sliding out of the socket.

Coracohumeral Ligament: Helps hold the upper arm bone in place, especially when your arm is at your side.

💡 Tip: Shoulder stability comes from a combination of ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Keeping your rotator cuff and scapular muscles strong protects these ligaments and reduces the risk of injury.

Meet Susan Huston, our amazing Patient Service Representative at Accel Physical Therapy! Susan is the friendly voice on the phone, the master of scheduling, and the warm smile greeting you when you walk through our doors in Brunswick. She keeps the front office running smoothly—and if you’re lucky, you might even catch one of her homemade muffins or her famous granola! 🧁

When she’s not helping patients have a great experience, Susan enjoys grabbing a burger at Sea Dog Brewing Company, something delicious from Wild Oats Bakery & Cafe, browsing treasures at Nest, and soaking up all the fun of Maine fair season in the fall (especially visiting the cows 🐄).

We’re so grateful for the positivity and care Susan brings to our team every single day! 💙

There’s something powerful about stepping outside, slowing down, and taking in the water and wildlife along the Topsham Swinging Bridge. Watching the ducks glide across the river as the light fades is more than just a beautiful view — it’s active recovery for your body and your mind.

A gentle walk outdoors can:
• Improve circulation
• Reduce joint stiffness
• Support balance and coordination
• Lower stress levels
• Boost overall mood

Want to turn it into a loop? Start in Topsham, cross the Swinging Bridge into Brunswick, and return over the new driving bridge for a 1.5–2 mile loop, depending on your starting point.

At Accel Physical Therapy, we believe movement doesn’t have to be complicated — sometimes it’s as simple as a sunset walk by the river.

Knee pain that won’t go away? Arthritis may be the reason.

Common causes of knee arthritis include:
• Repetitive stress
• Aging
• Previous injury
• Obesity
• Muscle weakness
• Malalignment of the knee joint
• Autoimmune diseases

Over time, these factors can wear down the joint surface, leading to stiffness, swelling, and pain.

The good news? Physical therapy can help a lot. Strengthening the muscles around your knee, improving flexibility, and correcting movement patterns can reduce pain and improve how you move.

If knee pain is limiting you, Accel Physical Therapy is here to help you stay active and moving confidently.

Your hamstrings play a critical role in how you move — from walking and running to lifting and jumping. In today’s post, we’re highlighting the importance of hamstring flexibility (like shown in this forward bend position!) and how it supports injury prevention and peak performance.

📏 How do we measure hamstring flexibility?

✔ Straight Leg Raise (SLR) Test
Normal range: 70–90° of hip flexion while keeping the knee fully straight.

✔ Popliteal Angle Test
Normal range: Within 20–30° of full knee extension (meaning the knee can straighten to about 150–160° when the hip is flexed to 90°).

If your numbers fall short, it may indicate tightness that can affect pelvic alignment, lower back stress, and overall movement mechanics.

🏃‍♀️ Why it matters for injury prevention:
When hamstrings are both strong and flexible, they:
• Help control deceleration during running and cutting
• Reduce strain on the lower back
• Improve knee stability
• Decrease risk of muscle strains and pulls
• Support better posture and movement efficiency

Flexibility without strength can lead to instability. Strength without flexibility can increase strain. The key is developing BOTH.

If you’re unsure where your flexibility stands, our team at Accel Physical Therapy can help assess and create a personalized plan to keep you moving safely and confidently.

Wellness Wednesday 🏃‍♂️🦵

Knee ligaments play a critical role in jumping, cutting, and athletic performance by providing stability and control during high-speed and high-impact movements. When these ligaments are strong and well-supported by surrounding muscles, they help protect the knee from injury and allow athletes to move with confidence, power, and precision. Keeping your knees stable is key to staying active and performing at your best.

Feeling tight through the front of your hips or thighs? Add these two stretches to your routine:

1️⃣ Standing Quad Stretch
Stand tall and gently pull one heel toward your glutes to stretch the front of the thigh.

2️⃣ Standing Hip Flexor Lunge (Front Foot Elevated)
Place your front foot on a step or bench, drop into a controlled lunge, and shift your weight forward to open the hip flexor.

Both stretches help open the front of the thigh and hip, supporting a longer, more comfortable stride when walking, jogging, running, or hiking. Move slowly and stay within a pain-free range.
