In my many years in higher education, I have observed that students who engage deeply in campus leadership experiences acquire tangible skills that translate into real work experience. However, many of these students do not recognize that their involvement is akin to a job. Additionally, they often struggle to translate these experiences onto a resume or articulate them effectively during interviews.

As a result, I created a workshop tilted, “Translating Leadership Experiences into Cash.” I conducted it at last week. Watch a testimonial from a phenomenal graduate student.

The training room was at capacity yesterday at the City of Winston-Salem’s Ascend Academy!

I conducted a workshop titled, “Tough Talks & Turning Points: Navigating Conflict and Crucial Conversations in the Workplace.”

The top three takeaways are:

1. Calm is contagious; escalating is too.
2. Conflict is not the enemy — avoidance is.
3. Listening is your best tool for de-escalation.

Family - I am back! I took a few weeks off from posting while celebrating my 50th birthday on September 28!

Turning 50 was both reflective and liberating. Everyone that has reached this point in their life has shared the same advice - “Don’t worry about what people think of you and stop doing things that no longer add value to your life.”

My 50 year old advice to those who are reading this - regardless of your age.

1. Stop spending time building someone else’s dream.

2. Relationships are critical to your success. If you don’t have at least two people you can call that can make some things happen, change your circle.

3. Opportunities are plentiful but they rarely come knocking. You have to seek them out.

4. You are in control of your own happiness.

5. Dream bigger!
