"Sitting with suffering is hard, whether you have suffered similarly, or not. Sitting with suffering requires us to protect ourselves from the invisible daggers that pierce our own hearts while we focus on bearing witness to her pain. This is when we grab onto all holding points at once, take a deep breath, and sit in stillness. How you manage this is largely dependent on your individual and therapeutic style. For me, when I am sitting with unbearable energy, I feel my chest tighten from the weight of her suffering and while I don’t feel particularly bad, I do feel as though I am physically trying to steady myself against howling winds. I breathe slowly and deeply to soften my tightening muscles, I plant my feet flat on the floor, and I gaze softly into her eyes. It is powerful. It is 'magic.'"
