The City of Buffalo Animal Shelter volunteers do a wonderful job of working with the shelter dogs to make them the best they can be.
Shelter life can be stressful, chaotic, and uncertain for the dogs… volunteers give so much of their time to make their stay the best possible, along with adding in training, fun time, and of course… some good ole fashioned snuggles and rewards of treats or praise.
They truly are amazing.
This is something really special 🥹
One of our volunteers, Anna Kate, who normally doesn’t write social media posts, wanted to handle this post herself because Hagrid means so much to her.
Please enjoy her words—and hopefully, we can find Hagrid a home this week 🤞
"Some dogs just know how to dog.
Hagrid… did not.
When he first arrived, he genuinely had no idea what to do with himself. So I worked with him.
Gave him structure, consistency, time—and just kept showing up.
And little by little… he figured it out.
And getting to watch that? Pretty incredible.
Hagrid is insanely smart—like, scary smart 😵💫. I’ve taught him “look at me,” stay, place, and spin… and I swear each one took under two minutes. Now we just keep building, and he gets it.
Put in a little effort with him, and he will meet you there, and then some!
He’s also ridiculously sweet. Big leaner. Fully convinced your only job is to pet him.
Hagrid takes treats like a polite little gentleman and happily accepts cuddles as payment.
And at adoption events?
He’s just… easy.
He sits or lays quietly right next to me, waiting his turn. If someone comes over, he leans in or gives you the classic “excuse me, butt scratches please.” If they’re not interested? He reads that instantly and moves on.
No chaos. Just good vibes.
He’s still just a puppy— around 11 months old —and watching him go from completely unsure to confident and engaged has been something really special.
He’s relatively housebroken, does well with calm, laid-back dogs (meet & greet required), and his opinion on cats is still under review.'
Anna Kate loves him, but she’ll love it even more when he’s finally someone's beloved pet again.
If you’re looking for a dog who’s smart, sweet, easy to work with, and ready to meet you halfway…
Hagrid’s ready ✅
