Want to make an investment in yourself and your business? I can think of little that would be more impactful than learning the basics of behavioral economics.

Everything you’re trying to accomplish comes down to one thing… getting people to do stuff. Behavioral economics, in its simplest terms, is the study of how and why people decide to do what they do (or don’t do). Whether you’re trying to sell, get users to adopt a new system or workflow, or make your staff feel comfortable coming back to work during a pandemic, understanding behavioral economics will greatly increase your chances of success.

Today we’re talking with Karen Sussman Horgan, CEO at VAL Health, Behavioral Economics Consulting about how behavioral economics is being used in healthcare today, and how it should be used going forward to drive positive behavior change throughout the industry.

Here's a clip of one example of doubling generic prescription rates overnight w/ a simple tweak.

I had a great conversation on healthcare innovation with Michael Ackerman - one of my favorite people to talk shop with. Mike and his colleagues just released a paper on The Novation Dynamic. It's a framework designed to address the three main obstacles to innovation in healthcare:

1. Healthcare is risk-averse
2. Health systems have little money to invest (especially now)
3. Healthcare orgs often lack sound innovation leadership

The Novation Dynamic has three key functions and they must all be executed in tandem:

1. Innovation: Creating new solutions where none exist. Filling gaps in a way that adds value.
2. Renovation: Think process improvement and quality. You take an existing process and make it better.
3. Exnovation: This is where you stop doing things that no longer add value

We get into the details and Mike shares actionable ideas for how to build a culture of innovation.

Check it out and let me know what you think!
